I really should have been the one to step up and cut things short here

😁

If I could just cast a single vote and be done with it, man, I would love that...

To be honest, I actually found myself liking several of the other responses too.

So, regarding how we limit the number of votes in next week's poll, I’m going to set up a separate poll for that specifically. 😍

steelridge58 said:Ah, I see, I see... I definitely didn't take it that way based on how you worded everything earlier.

🙂

I sent some messages over to casualtiger2 and Harold Doyle3 asking them to jump in here so we can finally get everything squared away.

Principally, I’m against any kind of side deal, but if things have already reached this point...🤷
I'm heading out. Hopefully, I managed to make things just a little more complicated for everyone. Poyy 😁

Since I’m rarely around the philosophy boards anyway—just a ghost in the machine, really—I'll leave the next topic selection up to Harold Doyle3.

Thanks for checking in, casualtiger2, though I really wish you’d pop in here more often
🙂 and make sure you don't miss out on participating in our upcoming round of the Election

(plus, we could always use more of your insightful questions over on the Open call thread... 😉))

I missed the most interesting part of the discussion, but it looks like velveteagle8 has made things so unnecessarily complicated that I feel compelled to suggest he be banned from approaching this topic in the future.

🙂) Someone mentioned—and I’m going off memory here—that you actually have to navigate through all that overwhelming complexity before you can ever reach true simplicity.
😁So, I wouldn't say I'd be the one calling for some kind of lockout or restriction, 😁 because honestly, seeing how we all just exhausted ourselves until we finally reached a beautiful agreement makes it worth it.

Sorry I haven't checked in sooner.
I’m currently knee-deep in laying laminate flooring throughout the house, and honestly, I have zero mental bandwidth for any deep philosophy right now. Let casualtiger2 throw out a question instead—he's always got something to ask anyway 😁... I can tell you one thing, though: putting together a jigsaw puzzle is a walk in the park compared to kneeling on your knees trying to piece together flooring...

It’s funny how everything just spirals out of control when you try too hard to be fair, democratic, and please every single person in the room...😁

In those situations where the vote ends up being a dead heat, I’d suggest that the person who actually asked the question should simply pick the answer they find most compelling.

If they won't—or perhaps can't—then let the moderator make the call.

(Even democracy has its little flaws...)

If we don't stumble upon another solution, here’s my question.
What are your thoughts on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras from a philosophical standpoint?

I, 2: yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ.
Yoga is the cessation of the "fluctuations of the mind" (citta-vṛtti).

I, 3: tadrūpa-avasthānam.
Only then—when those mental fluctuations settle—does "the Seer" (draṣṭṛ) reside in
their own true nature (svarūpa).

I, 4: vṛtti-sarūpya-antarātra.
Otherwise, "the Self" just ends up identifying with those mental fluctuations (vṛtti).

I'm looking for some deep dives here—parallels with established philosophies or even just your own personal experiences. 🙂
Feel free to pivot toward spirituality, too; I'm open to anything.
Yoga is rooted in Samkhya philosophy—basically a dance between spirit (purusha) and matter (prakriti).
Still, at its core, it's primarily a psycho-physiological discipline—almost anti-philosophical in a way.

One piece of work sets you free, while the other starts dragging in those old-school themes from India... what is wrong with everyone this morning? 😁 All we need now is an interview with Rudolf Hess. 😁
Where on earth did I end up?

Just one suggestion: I haven't been able to find any discussion regarding the relationship between "natural law and civil law." Let's see how things actually stack up there.

That was pretty much how we had it set up originally, but then Terry Martinez10 stepped in and said she’d actually prefer to let the people who haven't had a turn yet pick the questions—so, you know, casualtiger2 and Walnut, and so on and so forth...

I'm pretty sure they weren't, because it was obviously just a joke.

Look, that was merely a suggestion; I certainly didn't intend to cause any unnecessary confusion or stir up a mess.

Oh, absolutely, Terry Martinez10, we’re mostly just poking fun at how overcomplicated everything has become, and honestly, if I were in your shoes, I’d also just leave the questioning to those who haven't jumped in yet; there isn't any actual confusion or mess happening here, and besides, how would they even know that Walnut is busy installing laminate floors right this second?

🤣

Everything is fine, and I really want to thank you for stepping in here to help us try to sort this whole situation out, and for your suggestion too.

😘

To wrap things up

velveteagle8 said:To avoid overcomplicating an already tricky situation,🙂 I'll lay out my final suggestion here.
Regarding the voting process, we should vote for just one single answer.
As for how we pick a winner if there happens to be a tie:
- the author gets the deciding vote
- we use the criterion of whether the question has been asked before
- we simply reach a consensus

It seems we have reached a consensus on one point, and several others who jumped into this thread have voiced their support for the same thing: priority goes to the author's vote

In any other case where we run into a tie, let the moderator settle it by looking at whether the question was asked earlier or later chronologically.

If anyone still finds themselves struggling with this or feels like it's an issue, we'll eventually move toward a formal poll regarding a potential change to our multiple-choice options.

I’m dropping Simplicity’s suggestion right here

Simplicity said:Draganov's question actually brought back this one memory from my high school days, back when we were first being introduced to philosophy at the start of the semester. Our teacher walked into class, handed out blank sheets of paper, and told us to just write down a title like "My Personal Philosophy" and go from there—nothing else. Then he just walked out. He came back at the end of the period to collect them, and during the next class, he read aloud one or two sentences from each essay that he felt captured the essence of what we wrote, though he never revealed who wrote what.

I was thinking it might be pretty interesting if the responses to the questions we pose here were kept anonymous for a while. A user could just send their answer to steelridge58 via private message, and then she would post it on our behalf. We could vote on the response by its number, and once the voting wraps up, we’d finally reveal the author behind the words.

I’m totally on board with this, so if we want to give it a shot starting with the next round, I think it would be a blast. 👍

We could just try it for a single round to see how it feels; we don't have to commit to an anonymous mode forever, but maybe we could do it every few rounds depending on what everyone else thinks about the idea.
