My colleague's son just got word—nine whole days later!—that he has to quarantine because he went to some play where someone was apparently infected. Like, seriously? Nine days? If they're that late with the notification, there's really no point in even telling people anymore.
Honestly, this whole mandatory isolation thing needs to be scrapped. It just doesn't make sense anymore. Maybe it had a purpose at the very beginning when everything was first spreading, but now? We’re basically just having a giant, uncontrolled party with the virus—especially if you factor in all the people they can't even track down...

So, my kid just got slapped with a 10-day quarantine because some classmate tested positive.
Now, we just got hit with news that the isolation period is being tacked on for another 7 days because apparently, someone else in the class popped up positive in the meantime.
Is there actually any legal ground for them to extend those initial 10 days like this?
At this rate, they could basically sentence healthy kids to three months of isolation!
Right?
WTF?

A friend of mine has this situation where her husband came back from his trip and started showing every single symptom imaginable, so they rushed him in for testing right away. They told them that she and the kids are almost certainly going to catch it too, and the moment his results come back positive, everyone has to jump straight into self-isolation. And if they start developing symptoms themselves—which they actually did just a day or two later—they’re basically just expected to stay home for two weeks without any further testing... shrug emoji
That was the word from the epidemiologists over at the Mayo Clinic, since that’s where he went to get tested.

It really makes you wonder why they aren't testing every single infected person... and what's even more interesting is that they literally told them they could go about their business and walk around freely until his actual results arrive. 🙈

Honestly, I don't see the logic here. None.
And then they act surprised when people stop reporting their contacts.

This is just insane... honestly, we should be avoiding this stuff whenever possible, but they just keep terrorizing everyone with these rules. I mean, think about it—you have a kid stuck in isolation, and if they finish the period feeling totally fine, what's the point of extending it? It makes zero sense and has no logic behind it at all.
A buddy of a friend has his kid stuck at home in quarantine while the rest of the family is just going about their business normally—and of course, everyone in the house ends up coming into contact anyway.

Quarantine should last 10 days from the moment of potential contact with an infected person. If the child has already been in isolation for 10 days, I don't see the logic behind extending it. Are we talking about one specific child being isolated, or is the entire class being sent home?

They just extended the whole class detention period.
Honestly, I don't think they have any legal ground to stand on here.
You can't just keep people under house arrest indefinitely just because you feel like it, especially when they aren't even sick.
I'm totally lost on who I'm even supposed to contact to file a formal complaint...

So, you're telling me an entire classroom has to sit in quarantine for 17 days straight? Are you kidding me? This whole isolation thing is turning into a complete joke.

With these mandatory isolation orders, there isn't even a mechanism to appeal them. It's just yet another unconstitutional, unlawful decree that I’ve been venting about on this board for months now.

It's 14 days

What’s the point of self-isolating if you're just a contact of a contact?

How many days had they already served before they dropped the news about the extension?

Maybe five or six days.
But honestly, if you look at the actual breakdown, we’re talking ten plus seven...

The kid hasn't even been tested—at least not yet. They share a house, and the coach is interacting with fifty kids every single day... you really don't see the issue there?

So I gave the IRS a call and got...
They told me that given how things are looking, the only thing they might consider is extending the isolation period. When I pressed him on whether they could push it back by another three months, the guy basically shrugged it off—said that while it’s technically possible on paper, in his opinion, this is the one and only extension we're actually going to see.

If your kid ends up stuck in quarantine along with their whole class, they aren't gonna be testing everyone—only the ones actually showing symptoms.
And you won't be stuck in isolation either since the order was issued for the kid.
Look, the coach needs to act responsibly, but there's no requirement for them to self-isolate if they haven't had direct contact with someone infected.

Basically, if I'm following this right, there were two separate positive tests. You're already in quarantine because of the first one, and then the second one popped up right at the start of your isolation. The logic is that they want to make sure you aren't contagious for that 48-hour window before symptoms kick in, so they're extending it because of that second contact case.

Meanwhile, if someone else starts showing symptoms while you're stuck at home, but they weren't in contact with you during that 48-hour pre-symptom window, they aren't required to extend their quarantine.
Not sure if that makes sense.

If I were ordered into isolation tomorrow, my husband would just head to work like usual, and our little girl would still go to school and her practice. It’s only if I actually start showing symptoms and test positive that they’d bother with isolation.
So, basically, close contacts aren't expected to quarantine by default.

At some point, one really ought to exercise a bit of personal judgment regarding self-isolation.

In all seriousness—if you aren't technically required to isolate, yet you've been in close quarters with those who ended up testing positive—perhaps hosting a little "corona party" for ten to fourteen days isn't the worst idea... just staying home, working remotely, and calling it a day.

Generally speaking, if people are acting with that level of responsibility, they shouldn't be subjected to government mandates or fines at all.
