Karen Wilson5 said:That seriously shouldn't be happening. Thank goodness you guys were all being responsible and staying put.

I had the exact same expectation when my little one first had to stay home—I thought someone would actually contact us to explain the quarantine period and all that stuff—but honestly, the only instructions we ever got were from the school.

Now that my kid is home, I called our family doctor and she didn't even have it in the system that my child was on medical leave! If I hadn't called her myself, she wouldn't have known a thing... 🤦

Anyway, I'm sending you guys good vibes—hope everything goes as smoothly as possible for all of you.

Thanks y'all

If they put you under quarantine, does anyone actually go out and check who's living in your house, or are you just supposed to report it yourself?

We started digging into isolation and quarantine lengths based on what's actually out there, just to see if there's any real way to shorten them.

I ended up stuck in quarantine back in November because some guy caught it from a coworker who had the nerve to show up to the office with a fever for three straight days without saying a word to anyone until he was finally too sick to even function and had to beg for remote work. That guy ended up infecting half his department, including my close friend, and while my buddy actually did the right thing by calling me immediately once symptoms hit, the idiot who started this whole mess just treated the entire situation like some kind of joke.
Luckily, I didn't end up getting sick or anything, but I spent two miserable weeks rotting in my room just to make sure I didn't pass anything on to my family. My paycheck took about a 15% hit because of the sick leave, which really sucks, though the guy who infected everyone is doing fine and back at work, even if his sense of taste hasn't quite returned yet.
Those two weeks in isolation were nothing but a massive waste of life because you can't go anywhere, your income takes a dive, you miss important commitments, and you end up feeling like a burden on everyone else in the house.
The absolute worst part is that I'll never find out the name of that complete moron whose sheer carelessness put other people at risk and robbed me of my life for a couple of weeks. I'd love to know what he'd have to say to my face if I actually went after him to pay me back for the money I lost.

Regarding self-isolation, you’re looking at a 10-day window starting from your last contact with someone who tested positive. If that person isn't actually isolating themselves, the clock doesn't even start ticking until the day they finally recover.
I'm talking about people living in the same household where isolation isn't really an option because someone caught it.

Luckily, I tend to hang out with people who will give me a heads-up privately if they get sick, rather than handing over everyone else's info to health officials just so others can dodge quarantine.

I completely understand where you're coming from, but for some people, switching to this way of thinking is difficult. In previous years, there was so much pressure to show up to work no matter what. If someone was frequently sick or staying home for every little cold or cough, people would usually just roll their eyes and gossip about them behind their backs.
About seven or eight years ago, a coworker gave me the flu. He came into the office with early symptoms, and because of him, my paid vacation was ruined since I woke up with a fever on the very first day of my trip. Back then, nobody talked about getting compensation because someone else infected you; I just lost money because I was out for ten days, and I missed my entire ski trip.

James Cruz19 said:So, I was out for ten days—six of those were actual workdays. This lady I was with who actually caught the bug was just hanging at home after they cleared her $67. My doctor didn't even put me down for standard sick leave; she wrote it as isolation instead. Apparently, you get regular sick pay if you're actually sick, but if you're just in isolation, that's a different thing entirely. Anyway, my job told me I had to email Medicare to sort out my pay

Look, here’s how it works. If you're on regular sick leave because you're actually ill, your employer covers at least 70% of your pay (or more depending on your contract) for up to 41 days. But with this whole quarantine thing, the Social Security Administration picks up the tab immediately, and they just pay out a flat maximum of $1417 for the entire month. In real-world terms? If you make $2000, you get your daily rate for the days you actually worked, plus whatever difference there is from that $2000 amount during the $1417 days you were stuck in isolation. Basically, the higher your salary, the bigger the gap you'll notice, but if you're pulling in $1333, you won't see any difference at all.

I’ve always hated when people show up to the office feeling like death and end up infecting half the department. Honestly, I hope some of these changes stick long after the pandemic is over—like remote work.

About a year before the whole pandemic mess kicked off, a coworker I shared an office with used to show up to work completely feverish—coughing her head off and everything. I spent the entire time wearing a mask, while she just kept rolling her eyes at me. Every single time she left the room, I’d immediately crack the window open and scrub everything down with disinfectant. Now? All that behavior is considered totally normal.

So, some high schoolers in my neighborhood went to this birthday party last week, and man, it turned into a total COVID disaster zone. I guess five people in that house are all sick now; the kids are walking around totally fine without a single symptom, while both parents are absolutely wrecked and stuck in bed.

It’s pretty wild how during the height of the lockdowns, they were out there having massive backyard rages, acting like they were already immune or something.

Maybe they're just dealing with a reinfection.
Just wait until they start throwing massive parties now that they think they're actually immune... absolute breeding grounds for the virus.
If they didn't give a damn before, they definitely won't care now.

Nah, these old folks are so absolutely trashed they’ll probably feel like death warmed over the second they even try to stand up. 🙂

In this little rural clinic, we've got four different departments being held together by just one single nurse, while everyone else is stuck in isolation.

Quora:
A 62-year-old guy from Des Moines was caught breaking quarantine back on September 11, 2020. Even after being diagnosed with COVID-19 and told to isolate, he went out to a local bar and hung out on the patio with two other people while sipping a drink.

The next morning, he rolled up to someone's house in a tractor pulling a tank and emptied their septic tank. He hung around there for about half an hour. Later that afternoon, he showed up at another family's place and did the exact same thing.

"The Virovitica Municipal Court handed down a one-year prison sentence, suspended for three years," the Virovitica District Attorney's Office reported.

That’s not luck. That’s just being straight-up selfish.

Talk about a recipe for financial ruin. Back when the isolation period was 14 days, you were basically getting $700 for half a month—good luck with that. Plus, since anyone can report you as a contact an unlimited number of times, you could end up stuck at home for ten days at a time with zero dollars coming in. But hey, 90% of this country is living on minimum wage anyway, so I haven't seen anyone complaining about losing a few thousand dollars. If you're making $4k, you might as well stay home and rot for 10 days for free.

Nah, nobody's gonna stay home for that kind of cash. They need a raise, plain and simple.

Fine, maybe they take less, but my neighbor got about $250 just for 14 days of isolation while making $40,000 a year. If they were pulling in $80,000, how much would they get—maybe $2,000 or $3,000? Honestly, it’s no surprise people hide their contacts when the pay isn't even remotely fair.

That’s facts. That’s why I’m sitting on my vacation days.

I mean, I took a week off myself recently, and everything went fine—nothing catastrophic happened. No one at home ended up getting sick. We didn't bother with masks, and I wasn't isolating in a separate room or anything like that. I just sort of followed my own logic—if the symptoms are incredibly mild, then the viral load is probably minimal, I guess.
The only thing we avoided was any heavy hugging or kissing.
