It was definitely one of the most straightforward ways to handle things.👍

Things are slowly returning to some sense of normalcy. I don't have an issue with asking infected people or those who were exposed to change their behavior and stay away from crowds if they don't have to. But this notion held by some that bullying others will somehow make things better... that's a problem. It’s a threat to the community. Luckily, American institutions have been doing a very, very good job over the last few weeks, and these unreasonable ideas are being pushed aside more and more.

Where does it say you have to wave through a window? It just says you aren't allowed to leave your location—though we're seeing more exceptions lately, but that's a whole other discussion.

You claimed it’s a fact that if, say, the police knock and nobody answers, a fine is automatically issued. Even if a fine is issued, it can be contested in court.

All in all, aside from those few spring incidents that were basically media stunts for publicity, the police are handling this professionally and rationally. Same goes for the CDC. No need for folk wisdom or anecdotal "facts." The institutions have things under control.

That's true! For a fine to actually happen, they have to prove that the specific violation actually occurred. This idea that the police can just fine people simply because they won't open their doors is honestly just nonsense. You could fight those kinds of fines in court with 100% certainty (if they even try to issue them, that is). It’s kind of like getting a parking ticket when it hasn't even been determined if you were parked illegally or not.
But, like I was saying before, you could still technically violate self-isolation orders without even leaving your house.

Nicole James said:Of course, from your perspective, it makes total sense—you head out alone into the woods, you aren't going to run into anyone, you aren't a threat to anyone, so why bother being stuck inside? It seems pointless to be penalized for that.

The problem is, here in the States, people are getting arrested constantly just for stepping out to a grocery store or a local pub. Since there is no way to monitor whether you actually took a responsible solo hike into the forest or if you actually headed out drunk with a group of friends, the only way to maintain any kind of order is to mandate that everyone stays home. At the end of the day, you have to consider those unplanned scenarios—like if you pass out or have an emergency, and an ambulance picks you up and rushes you to a nearby ER where you might end up infecting the medical staff along the way...

Honestly, that sounds more like house arrest to me. 🤷

Does anyone know if someone who tested positive for antibodies—meaning they already had COVID and their body built up immunity—still has to go into self-isolation if they're flagged as a contact?

So they say:

You aren't subject to medical monitoring during quarantine or self-isolation if, within the last three months, you have:
• had a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19 (via PCR test) or were identified as a close contact who developed symptoms and tested positive via a rapid antigen test.
• been classified as a probable case based on clear epidemiological history and clinical presentation (for example, a household member living with a lab-confirmed patient who develops characteristic symptoms during quarantine).

What happens to the people who don't have a doctor's note just to take their dog for a walk through an empty forest?

Has anyone actually gotten their paid sick leave for isolation yet?

A colleague of mine was in isolation—it usually just counts as standard sick leave, I guess.

Look, that amount can vary wildly—it could be huge or tiny depending on how many sick days you actually used and what your gross pay looks like.

$1467/mj is the absolute ceiling for all this COVID nonsense, so just do the math yourselves. The higher the stimulus check, the more expensive it gets for everyone to just stay home and do nothing.

Well, there it is. I guess that's just how it goes. Last year, about five days in, they took roughly $133 from me. It really depends on what your gross pay looks like, I suppose.

So, I was out for ten days—six of those were actual workdays. This lady I was with who actually caught the bug was just hanging at home after they cleared her $67. My doctor didn't even put me down for standard sick leave; she wrote it as isolation instead. Apparently, you get regular sick pay if you're actually sick, but if you're just in isolation, that's a different thing entirely. Anyway, my job told me I had to email Medicare to sort out my pay

I'm totally with you on this.
Take my kid, for example—he was stuck in quarantine after being at his local Elementary School. He had his regular online classes every single morning, while my husband, the little one, and I just went about our lives like usual.

Since he spent basically all day in his room with headphones blasting, there’s zero chance he would've even heard the doorbell if the rest of us weren't home...

So yeah, there are tons of different scenarios here—you can't just show up and slap someone with a fine just because they didn't answer the door.

Hey,

Does anyone actually know the deal here?
My mom just tested positive today. Since we all live under the same roof, I’m wondering how long the rest of us need to isolate if we don't show any symptoms. I’ve heard a dozen different things—some say 14 days, some say 10, others say 10 days after she recovers... I guess it's all over the place.
Thanks.

I suppose the main difference here is simply how the billing works—when you're on this kind of leave, you go straight to Medicare for coverage, rather than having the employer cover those first 42 days like they normally would. The actual payout amount stays the same, unless—and this is a big 'unless'—it's classified as an occupational illness for those who were infected. In that specific case, you might actually get your full salary.

Speaking from experience here—since both my first and second kiddo ended up in isolation recently—it’s currently 10 days. Definitely make sure to check in with your family doctor though.

Thanks for the heads up.
We've been staying put at home ever since Mom was sent for testing, but since her doctor isn't working today, we haven't been able to reach anyone yet.

Just wanted to share what happened with us, though I don't know if this has happened to anyone else. Mom was sent for testing on Friday morning, and we waited 48 hours for the results, but absolutely nobody called us. Then, after those 48 hours passed, Mom finally calls them today, only to be told she's positive. In my case, nobody even left the house during those few days, but if they hadn't known sooner... I mean, even if it were negative, just totally "forgetting" to report a positive result is... well, it's something.

That seriously shouldn't be happening. Thank goodness you guys were all being responsible and staying put.

I had the exact same expectation when my little one first had to stay home—I thought someone would actually contact us to explain the quarantine period and all that stuff—but honestly, the only instructions we ever got were from the school.

Now that my kid is home, I called our family doctor and she didn't even have it in the system that my child was on medical leave! If I hadn't called her myself, she wouldn't have known a thing... 🤦

Anyway, I'm sending you guys good vibes—hope everything goes as smoothly as possible for all of you.
