Maybe the real issue here is that you're looking for drama where there isn't any? Like, why should it even be your problem if some guy just isn't in the mood to joke around? And who gets to decide where the line is drawn anyway?
Just because someone acts a bit mechanical around certain people doesn't mean they're a robot to everyone else—it sounds more like the group just doesn't vibe with him. Honestly, if you guys keep gossiping and freezing him out instead of just letting him be, he’s only going to pull away further. He might actually enjoy a good laugh, but if you're all acting cold toward him, what's he supposed to do? What if the guy's dealing with a massive credit card debt or some heavy health issues at home and he's just not in the headspace for jokes right now? To me, it looks like you guys are more like competitors than actual friends who just want to hang out—except you aren't at a local dive bar, so you feel like you have to act a certain way. I wouldn't stick around an environment like that either, and what could anyone even do about it? Nothing. I clock out after eight hours and we don't ever have to speak again. I was exactly like that when I first started a job—I felt like a total bot, but honestly, it was just because I didn't have anything smart to say yet. Now that I've found a few things to talk about, it's fine; I'm not interested in talking just for the sake of talking. My crew at work is pretty chill for now; we're all different. Someone’s married, someone’s single, someone’s not much to look at, someone’s carrying a bit of extra weight—but nobody's making fun of anyone else. And if someone messes up—like, they spill something or break something they shouldn't have—nobody’s going to badger them for it, not even the manager. They can just move on, chat with people like nothing happened, and finish their shift in peace. People who spend all day cracking jokes aren't even reliable friends—I wouldn't even call them friends, really. I don't take them seriously. You try to propose something legit, like a new project at the office, and then this joker messes it up because he was too busy being funny, and suddenly you're stuck dealing with the fallout.
