PayPal mobile wallet

Hello everyone,

I need to send some US Dollars to my brother, but since standard bank transfers and traditional methods like mailing a check or even driving it over to him 🤣 aren't really feasible right now, I'm looking for some alternative solutions. 🙂

I happened to come across PayPal, which seems decent enough, but I’d really appreciate hearing about anyone's actual experiences using it.

I’ve downloaded the app—though I haven't quite finished the registration process yet—but I’m having a bit of trouble grasping how the whole thing actually works. For instance, if I were to send a payment to briskrider19 $33, what happens next?

Just enter the amount and the recipient's phone number. If you’re paying with cash, you'll get a barcode—just show that to the clerk at the register. They scan it, and you're all set with an instant payment right there at the shop.

Once your payment clears, I get my own barcode, head over to the retail location, and pull out the cash.

There’s a fee involved—I think it scales depending on how much you're sending.

Their website lays everything out pretty clearly, so honestly, just check the site first.😉

The big upside here is that if you send money via card, the bank doesn't hit you with those annoying ATM withdrawal fees. Since it’s processed as an online purchase, it stays fee-free. It would be awesome if they added Diners Club and American Express to the mix too, because using those is way more cost-effective than just pulling cash out of an ATM. 😁

Here’s my take. I stumbled upon them on Facebook and downloaded the app once I realized pulling cash onto a credit card through PayPal is actually cheaper than hitting an ATM. I end up using them all the time. For instance, $67 it only costs me $1.75 in fees via PayPal, whereas the Mastercard I carry hits me with about $10 at certain ATMs. Pretty sure it's the same deal with Visa. If you're ever in a pinch and need a big chunk of change, say $667, PayPal only takes $13 in fees, while ATMs usually grab over $20 and sometimes even close to $33.

I've run a ton of transactions so far and everything has been smooth sailing—it's always fast and reliable. 🙂

I'm with you on this. It would be great if they finally added Diners Club and American Express to the mix so I wouldn't have to deal with the headache of using Venmo just to withdraw cash.

The only downside to using PayPal is that I have to hit a gas station to use it. I don't even drive, and there isn't an ExxonMobil near me. It would be great if they added more cash withdrawal locations.

It’s honestly great that we have something like this available here. I currently rely on foreign apps like Venmo and Chime, which will make even more sense once we switch over to the US Dollar.

So, my dad works abroad (over in Germany) and he’s sent us money back home to the States a few times using PayPal. It’s actually a pretty solid app, really straightforward to use. I guess for me, the biggest win is just how fast it is... like, you hit send and the money is basically there in seconds. Plus, there isn't any annoying paperwork to deal with, and the fees seem pretty reasonable to me...🙂

And on another note, I sent some money over to my brother using PayPal, and everything went through without any hiccups. I honestly thought the folks at the gas station wouldn't have a clue what to do with it, but I guess I was mistaken 🙂

Regarding sending funds from Germany, does one actually need an American card denominated in US Dollars to make that happen?

With Christmas right around the corner, maybe I'll get a little something from the relatives working abroad 😁?

PayPal just added a way to pay for parking in Washington, D.C. They’re even throwing in some bonuses. You just pay for one parking ticket and you get $3.25 credited back to your PayPal account.

You can't add Chime. As for Apple Card, I have no clue.

Has anyone actually tried paying a bill using PayPal before? I’m wondering how long it takes for the payment to actually clear. Does anyone happen to know which network they use for SWIFT transfers? According to their website, they process everything through Citibank and a partner bank.

Next business day. On my end, it cleared from their Citibank account, but they probably have a few more accounts than just that one...

Starting January 1st, 2021, Citibank is gonna start slapping a 2% fee on you just for pulling cash out of their ATMs.

I can't help but feel that using PayPal seems somewhat redundant in this day and age... they seem to charge fees for absolutely everything!
Does anyone know if there are any overarching advantages to using it?

Cash deposits.
Depositing (and hopefully withdrawing) money at casinos or sportsbooks...

They’re announcing a price hike for parking starting April 7th. Or maybe it's just some weird adjustment—who knows? Could be a VISA promotion or something. We'll see.
