So, here’s the situation. My mom lent her neighbor a hotspot device for Wi-Fi, with a simple deal: the neighbor would just pay back whatever she used.

Well, this woman ended up racking up $833 in charges. When my mom went over to settle the bill, things went totally sideways. The neighbor started screaming at her, physically attacking her, throwing stuff, and I guess she was actually trying to kill her with a chair before the husband stepped in and helped get my mom out—she was too shaken up and unwell to even move herself.

Since this all went down inside the neighbor's house, I'm wondering if there's any point in calling the cops, and what can actually be done about this whole mess?

Man, did they actually put that lending agreement in writing? Even so, you absolutely should have called the police because an assault is an assault, regardless of whether it happened on private property—it's not like we're in some wild version of the US where people think they have a free pass to go ballistic on anyone who steps foot in their living room. Just because it happened in her apartment doesn't mean physical violence is suddenly okay.

Nah, it was more of an agreement. Like, they didn't have any way to get online, so we just gave them a USB drive and figured they'd cover whatever costs came up later.

Aha, so getting that debt collected is going to be a nightmare then. But reporting an assault? That’s what actually matters. You guys should've just called the cops right away.
