Sandra Wells5 said:An employee was working on a fixed-term contract as an assistant construction worker until June 30th. As of July 1st, he transitioned to a permanent role, but his job title changed too—he’s now a warehouse manager. I need to update his records with Medicare, but when I try to change both the occupation and the contract type at once, the system blocks me, saying I can only edit one field per filing. Does this mean I have to submit two separate M-3P forms—one for the job title and one for the contract status? I'm also a bit thrown by the fact that there isn't a "start date" box for the occupation change; I don't want to accidentally overwrite his original registration as an assistant worker since he held that position for a full year. Any advice?

Yes, you'll need to prepare two separate M-3P forms. I ran into a similar situation once where I had to report both a change in job title and a shift from full-time to part-time status, and following their specific instructions, I had to process them as two distinct changes.

Hey there! Has anyone dealt with registering a new business lately? I headed in this morning to get a new company and an employee (who also happens to be the founder) set up with Medicare—the pension side went through without a hitch!—but they told me it wouldn't work. Apparently, he has to register as a board member instead, which means paying higher contributions.

I just spent an hour on the phone with Medicare, NOAA, and the IRS. Turns out, there’s this law from 2013 they finally started enforcing at Medicare last month. It’s causing a massive headache for businesses right now because they’re getting hit with bills for contribution differences they didn't see coming.

Basically, if you're a founder, you have to make sure you're covered as a board member—that's the only way to stay compliant, unless you already have a job somewhere else.

The information at this link focuses entirely on the founders, board members, or the managing director of an LLC.
What about the director of a standard corporation?

It applies to them as well.

They’ve completely lost it!
Are we all just supposed to go ahead and change our payroll bases now? Are we just sitting around waiting for Medicare and NOAA to eventually send over the difference?
So, I guess you can dodge the system by appointing someone who already has a full-time gig elsewhere as the director for a private firm, regardless of what their reported income looks like?
And what about the current director running their own LLC? Do they just suddenly morph into a regular employee overnight?

There is an entire discussion thread dedicated to this specific issue—perhaps you might find it useful to take a moment to read through it.

Is it still possible to get three different people at the Medicare and Social Security offices?

It feels more like two to me... not really three

Hey everyone, quick question: when you're signing an employment contract, should they be using your home address or just where you're currently staying?

In my opinion, you should go with your current mailing address. From a tax perspective, especially when dealing with the IRS and local withholdings, having your actual residence on file is generally what matters most. That being said, if you're drafting the agreement yourself, there isn't any real reason you couldn't include both—just be sure to clearly label which one is your legal permanent residence and which is your current mailing address.

Up to three—yeah. Anything more than that, you'll have to do it online...

So, you could just file under Section 61 of the Tax Code to add an extra hour a day to someone's payroll—it would probably cost around... $47 Every single month—it just keeps coming. 😁 Well, you should probably just make sure you're actually signed up then—simple as that! I honestly don't see why people make such a big deal out of this—it’s just basic common sense! It's all about the companies—honestly, they really run the show.

I’ve been wondering for a while now: what specific documents and data am I legally required to hand over to an employer when signing an employment contract? We know about the Social Security number, obviously, but what else? Is a full printout of my work history—you know, my pension and service records—actually necessary? I suppose all that stuff is easy enough to pull up these days. But does an employer even get to see my previous tenure or the actual names of the companies where I was previously registered? Do they even have access to that information?

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Where is this documented online? Some sort of official employment guide...

🤔
How can I find my Social Security number through Medicare? An employee is about to leave one employer and start with another soon. How do I locate that number, where should I go, and who is the right person to contact?

You can find that number on your employment records, either by pulling it up through the official government portal or just grabbing a printout from Medicare.
Usually, the employee handles all that legwork themselves and then hands it over to the new boss.

Just give the USGS a call and ask them...😉
If you're filing everything through the mobile app, you don't even really need to manually enter the Social Security number, as the application processes just fine without it...😉

As for the Medicare app, it constantly throws up those security warnings, but honestly, you should just ignore the alert and log in anyway...

Quick question regarding a job application—I need to submit my Social Security records to prove I don't have prior work experience. I checked my online portal and received an official statement via email, but it indicates I haven't been enrolled in the system yet. Am I supposed to be registering myself for this?

Moved my address, so my boss updated my info with Medicare and the USGS. Now he’s telling me I need to update my tax withholding card too. Is there anything else I should be doing besides those three things?
