I don't think it has anything to do with patriotism or complaining for the sake of it. There are so many people his age out there facing real hardships—people freezing in the streets, digging through trash, or living on Social Security checks that don't even cover the basics—yet he's the one being told he doesn't have the right to vent.

My father was seriously ill for four years—really rough times—but we didn't spend our days complaining. We just bit the bullet, paid for every single medication out of our own pockets, and kept our struggles quiet, even from our closest friends and extended family.

That could certainly be the case, but I’m looking at this from the perspective of a healthy person who should have enough common sense to realize you can't hold a sick man—especially one suffering that severely—to the same standard, even if his venting is unrealistic. In short, it comes down to basic decency.

If my memory serves, Kit was actually filling in for the Headman in Congress. He took that seat once the Headman moved on to become a Governor after the local elections, so he never actually qualified for a Congressional pension.

I suppose that might be what you would do—or maybe me, or any regular person caught in a bind. Honestly, some people probably have legitimate reasons for acting this way. I truly wish him a speedy recovery, of course, but all this constant whining is just a little pathetic.

Look, you have plenty of elderly people living alone in massive condos in downtown Chicago or New York, who acquired their wealth through God knows what means, yet they still pull various forms of social assistance from the state or the city. There was even a major feature story about it in a national newspaper a year or two back. But none of that changes the fact that you shouldn't judge someone who is fighting a serious illness, even if their complaining seems unrealistic.
