Has anyone here dealt with an expired digital certificate for the IRS portal before?
We didn't get any heads-up that the certificate was about to expire. We use the one provided on a security token from our business bank, and I tried logging into the IRS system today only to realize the certificate actually lapsed two days ago.

My bank told me to just reach out to them to sort it out, but I'm stuck wondering about the next step: once they issue the renewal, will I have to go through the whole registration process again for the IRS system, or does everything just sync up automatically once the new certificate is live?

Best,

Just renew the certificate and you're good to go.

Greetings, everyone. I need to pull my tax certificate for a new employer, but I'm hitting a wall with the IRS website. Every time I try, it tells me, "Taxpayer has no return form or account is closed." Does anyone know how to bypass this to get my documentation sent directly to my email?

Actually, your employer should be the one handling that by pulling your withholding info directly from the IRS once they've officially processed your onboarding paperwork.

I was told I have to handle this removal myself... (honestly). I don't exactly have the luxury of time to drop by in person right now. I don't use online banking, and from what I can see, trying to navigate this through their website is a complete circus. It would be much more efficient if they could just send the confirmation directly to my email. Has anyone actually managed to pull that off yet?

Since January 1st, 2018, the responsibility for "issuing" employee tax identification documentation has shifted over to the accountants, so those old-school physical red tax cards that people used to carry from one employer to another simply don't exist anymore...

Actually, it isn't that the obligation was handed off to accountants, but rather that through the official IRS employer portal, an employer can now just easily pull up a tax card for any of their staff whenever they need to.

That's just one way to handle the tax ID issuance... you can actually do it yourself at the IRS, through a digital portal, or have your employer take care of it.

Hey there,

I just landed a job at a university, but after signing my contract, they asked me for my tax withholding info. When I log into the IRS portal under the tax withholding tab, I get this error message: "User is an employee of a business entity but is not in the taxpayer registry." Any idea what I should do?

The best way to handle this is to head over to the official government portal, log in, and then navigate through these specific sections:
IRS Online Services
Profile
Tax Withholding Information

The system says I'm an employee, but it doesn't recognize me in the tax registry.

That's the error message popping up for me after I try following those steps.

I'm currently navigating through the IRS online portal trying to fill out my tax withholding forms.

Does anyone know where I can find the specific supplemental forms? All I'm seeing on my dashboard is the standard withholding paperwork, but nothing else...

That specific form isn't required anymore. The IRS handles everything automatically based on the data they already have on file for you. That said, if you still feel more comfortable attaching it just to be safe, you're more than welcome to upload it as an attachment.

Wait, I don't see him anywhere?
So, once I actually hit send, will that attachment finally show up or what?

You won't find it listed in the IRS online portal either. Let me walk you through this step-by-step.😉
It sounds like you might have downloaded a PDF version of the 2018 tax form from a website and filled it out before even logging into the official IRS electronic filing system. If that’s what happened, just save page 8 as a PDF and upload it as an attachment to the return you already submitted via the electronic portal.
Technically, you aren't even required to fill it out or submit it because the IRS already has all your data regarding your specific personal tax credits on file.

Basically, just complete the form through the IRS electronic filing system and submit it. Then, navigate to your "submitted returns." Select the specific form you just sent. You'll see an "attachments" section at the bottom where you can upload whatever you need in PDF format—including that specific document you have saved on your computer. There isn't a separate field for that specific attachment within the standard electronic interface.
Honestly, though, why let this stress you out? It shouldn't be necessary to send. Whether you include it or not, the IRS will process your return based on the information they already have registered in their system.

Once I’ve updated my residency in a new city through the IRS portal, do I need to file an "Application for Change in Taxpayer Registry Data" just to get a tax ID card reflecting my new address?

Hi there! Please excuse the sudden intrusion. I was filing my Democratic Party paperwork electronically and realized I completely blanked on entering the number of employees—so right now, it’s sitting at zero. My contact over at the IRS told me that when I submit the updated version, I need to be careful not to let them think it's a duplicate filing, but rather an official correction to the original Democratic Party form. Since this is my first time navigating this particular hurdle... could someone point me in the right direction? Basically, instead of starting a brand new filing from scratch, should I just pull up the one I already sent from the list of submitted forms, strip the digital signature so I can make the edits, re-sign it, and send it back out? Is that the right way to play it? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance!
