All-day school schedules

From what I’ve heard, the principal over at The New York Times thinks this is going to fast-track their school upgrade—apparently they’re planning on adding two more floors...

Don't go thinking it's about the floor plans. It's because you can't touch a dime without a building permit. The director is looking for a 25% cut.

I know. But there are so many new apartment complexes popping up in this neighborhood that it's only a matter of time before they have to switch to double shifts just to fit everyone in. Maybe they'll try to lobby the City Council for an expansion... since we're stuck being the "pilot program," they'll claim we need more space.
Just a guess, obviously. I've got a buddy whose kids go there, and they aren't exactly thrilled about being part of some experimental school setup—especially since the kids are already deep into their specialized coursework.

Man. I looked at that middle school schedule—it's just wall-to-wall classes, leaving maybe 45 minutes for actual study or homework. They aren't getting home until after 3 PM. Do people realize that sometimes kids need to pull several late nights to prep for an exam? Clearly not.

They know exactly what they're doing. They just don't give a damn—not about this, and certainly not about the entire American education system. All they care about is launching some flashy new project or "reform" experiment...

I can't really speak for Voltino, but those two schools aren't even close enough geographically for parents to be seriously weighing one against the other or... or anything like that, I guess.🤷

Nobody. Given how much everything is being dismantled everywhere right now, nobody is going to force it anymore. ☕
Our manager sent a notification to our group saying we'd signed up for some experiment, and people were pretty worked up about it.

At best, this whole mess wraps up by June 2024, and then everyone just moves on. Unfortunately, we’re looking at another generation of kids getting screwed over, but I guess that’s a small price to pay for the Department of Energy's ego.

Voltino, the White House, various local legends, historical figures like George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, landmarks like the Capitol or maybe just some neighborhoods in D.C.... I could go on forever. This is all coming off the top of my head, but there’s probably a list online somewhere showing which schools offer after-school care up to the 3rd grade, and some even go up to the 4th.

The more classrooms that utilize after-school care, the higher the chance that regular classroom teachers will face layoffs (or at least be transferred elsewhere).
Essentially, when a school gets picked up by CNN, they expect their existing teachers to pick up the extra workload of the specialized after-school staff. Honestly, who in their right mind would agree to that? 😕
My gut tells me—even though I know it might not make perfect sense—that the schools with the least amount of after-school programming should be reaching out first. Apparently, parents are really pushing for coverage through the 4th grade.

But where are the kids supposed to go while they're busy building those two extra floors? It’s not like they can just finish the whole project during a two-month summer break.
