I'm spiraling over my partner's past.

Look, I get it—the present is what matters, and exes are exes for a reason. But still...

Yesterday, during a conversation, I found out something I really shouldn't have. I know, I know—it’s ancient history, and we’ve been together for three years now. But somehow, this jealousy just flared up out of nowhere. Picturing the person I love doing... certain things with someone else? Yeah, not exactly a great feeling.

We were just talking about our past relationships versus how things are now. Then they dropped something on me that totally floored me. I didn't even want the details, but there it was...

I basically just stood up, grabbed my stuff, and walked out. No words. I know it wasn't the right move, but I don't know why I'm struggling so much to accept that there was a whole life before me.

Now I'm a mess. I can't even bring myself to be physical with them—it's like their past makes me feel physically repulsed.

Is this just being possessive? Or am I looking at some kind of pathological jealousy?

Well, are you usually this jealous about other things, or is this the first time you've acted like this?

What you did wasn't right; I hope you went and apologized to her.

I don't know the specifics, but honestly, finding out wouldn't be any fun for me either. I’d feel more disappointed than jealous, to be honest...🤷
Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss.

It would actually kill me if I found out something about someone I love that just didn't fit who they are to me.
That said, I still think the past says a lot about a person. I'm not sure I could just brush that kind of information aside just because it happened a long time ago...

Honestly, I think digging up the past like that was just a mistake—especially when it gets into such intimate territory. I totally get why you’re reacting this way, and I really believe things will settle down if your partner puts in the work to show you she's all in. But hey, look on the bright side: consider this a massive lesson for the future to just leave those old relationship stories in the rearview mirror!

Look, I know I can be possessive and jealous, but I never let it show. I usually just bottle it all up inside.

Between dealing with depression and everything else making life miserable, this is just one more thing on the pile—not sure if it’s a big deal or not, honestly.

Yeah, I'm with you. 👍 Some things are probably better left unknown.

Lesson learned for the future.

Look, I totally get where you're coming from, but that's all in the rearview mirror now. Try rewinding the tape in your head and find that one thing—that core reason—why you fell for her in the first place.
If that feeling hits harder than whatever new stuff you just found out, then you have your answer. Go back to her.
Don't go making a move that's just going to leave you full of regret later.
She had a whole life before you showed up, but right now, she's here with you.

thanks for all the advice, everyone.
people over on Reddit aren't exactly helpful when it comes to this stuff, so I figured I'd move the conversation over here.
seems like there are more grown-ups dealing with actual problems here.
i guess. 😉

If you want to call that ill intent "defensiveness"—it probably hits a nerve with them, making them feel "attacked." 😬

(Trust me, I know a thing or two about defensiveness—specifically when it comes to self-promotion. LOL.)

Why do I get the feeling you both act like little boys? I mean, seriously—it’s just so childish and immature. You have every right to keep your former partners around, but the other side doesn't really have a choice since they can't stand you.

I think you really need to look at whether this jealousy over a partner's past is actually about maturity, or if there's some deeper issue lurking underneath. If you’ve been together three years and this sudden jealousy over what happened before you met is so intense that you packed your bags and walked out, then yeah, something is definitely broken. You either need to deal with your own baggage regarding their history, or face the fact that there's a real problem in the relationship itself.

So, was this seriously the first time in three years you guys even brought up the past?

I don't see the point in exhausting yourself over things that are fundamentally unchangeable.🤷
The past is set in stone.
If you have identified yourself—which you clearly have—as a jealous and possessive individual, then I am sorry, but that is your burden to carry, not his. You need to learn how to manage those impulses if you intend to sustain a relationship with him or anyone else.
Jealousy and possessiveness are purely destructive to partners.

Man, I feel you. Maybe too much so... I don't really have any advice, because if I did, I would've used it on myself instead of beating myself up like I have been lately.. 👎

And what if they are? 😕

But how am I supposed to *not* stress? (Seriously asking here, not trying to be provocative 😛)

I honestly don't get how someone can be in a relationship for ages and still have absolutely no clue who their partner actually is.
I mean, you're supposed to lay it all out there in those first few months, just both of you being totally open. It’s just common sense, really, so you don't end up in some weird situation later where one person is throwing "but you said..." in the other's face.

And let's be real, jealousy and being super possessive always go hand in hand, which is just straight-up toxic.
If you actually care about someone, you've gotta talk about the heavy stuff as much as you need to until you get past it. The sooner you deal with it, the better.

Man, how are you even letting yourself spiral into a depression over something that's already done and dusted? Like, there was nothing you could do to change what happened, right?

Even if you decide to call it quits and break up, that jealousy and possessiveness isn't just going to vanish. You seriously need to go find some professional help or something.

I see the whole picture now. And yeah, I get that it’s on me. This whole possessive, jealous thing... maybe it's just some deep-seated insecurity from stuff that happened way before this relationship even started.
anyway, thanks for the input, everyone.

Well, that is definitely a problem. I mean, what’s the point of claiming you’ve never shown jealousy before if you're reacting this way to something from the distant past? 😢

You’re insecure about yourself and your partner's love. It doesn't matter how she acts or how much she proves her devotion; she isn't going to fix your insecurity for you.

Yeah, it’s tied to the depression.

Are you aware that you could lose her because of this? That you might be incapable of maintaining any relationship at all? Isn't that enough reason to go see a professional? Until you realize, deep down, that you actually have value and deserve love, you won't be able to accept it from someone else. Without fixing that hole in your heart, you're just going to stay miserable, unable to receive affection, and constantly sabotaging your relationship with this insecurity. 😢

This is the real issue here. You have to deal with this, because it's going to sabotage every single relationship you ever have.

Honestly, that’s just how you’re wired—a guy who actually gives a damn about his own headspace and uses his brain is always going to struggle when a partner has a messy history.
Subconsciously, you're doing the math, right? You realize that if things go south down the road, you can't exactly bank on that person being loyal.
Don't just bury those feelings, though—even if it means calling it quits—because you don't want to be sitting there kicking yourself later...

🤦

Well, I'd argue this applies just as much to women, 😬
and honestly—why wouldn't someone struggle with fidelity if they've finally found everything they were looking for in a single person?
Besides, if her past truly mattered that much, I guess it wouldn't really be considered the past anymore.
