Man, I’ve been wrestling with this one thing for what feels like forever, and honestly, I just don't know how to fix it. Looking at my own orientation, I’m either gay or bisexual—it kind of fluctuates—and it's starting to really get under my skin. Every single day, walking down the street, I hear people shouting things like, "What's wrong with those queers?" or "Someone should teach them a lesson," or "How can they even show their faces in public?" Look, I try to brush it off, I really do. I tell myself, "Hey, they're just being hateful, but hey, those people are still humans, even if they are the way they are." At first, I was fine with it. Just thought, *whatever, it is what it is, right?* I figured I just had to toughen up and deal with the noise. But after a while, it started eating at me. It created this constant, restless anxiety inside my chest. I see couples everywhere—just happy, totally in love—and I start spiraling. Like, why? Why did this happen to me? Why can't I feel what everyone else feels, you know? That spark with a woman? God, I just want to have a girlfriend. Not a boyfriend. I want to start a normal life, not... whatever this is. Did I even get a choice in the matter? Heck no! Eventually, I just hit a breaking point and told myself, "I don't want this." I don't want to be who I am. I just want a regular life with a girl who loves me, someone I can protect and look after. I want to love her, I want her body to drive me crazy, I want to be a man who loves women. But no matter how hard I try, it feels like I’m tethered to the ground. Like it's some impossible dream I'll never reach. Honestly, I’d rather not exist than keep living like this. I’ve been fighting this battle for so long now. I’ve tried watching lesbian porn—strictly girls—trying to ignore men entirely, doing my own thing to nothing but women, trying to figure out what makes their bodies exciting to me. After months of pure misery and struggling through it, I thought I finally made progress. I started feeling something for women, but it’s mostly just affection; their bodies only turn me on a little bit. Now everything is just a massive, confusing mess. Sometimes it's guys, sometimes it's girls. I'm totally lost and I don't know where to go from here. I know it sounds silly or unrealistic, but that’s truly how I feel. Right now, I just feel like the most pathetic creature on earth. I’m desperate.

So, I guess what I'm asking is... is it actually possible to change your sexual orientation?

Has anyone else ever gone through something similar? What does it even take to make a change like that?
How much time does it actually take? Has anyone ever truly succeeded? Please, seriously, any info would help me out. I honestly don't care if I end up being a firm bisexual or straight, as long as I'm not gay.

No, don't mess around with your mental and physical well-being. Just find yourself a boyfriend, get to know who you really are, embrace it, and start enjoying life.

I went through that exact same phase myself. Over time, it became crystal clear to me that there was no way I could change; that attraction to the same sex is just a steady thing that exists outside of your willpower.... eventually, I broke up with my girlfriend and went to see a psychologist to ask if I was "normal." They confirmed that everything was perfectly fine, and well, here I am today, feeling great.

Good luck with everything 👍.

we would be the perfect couple😍 I'm just worried about diseases... find yourself an aggressive girl who likes to dominate and act masculine, wears makeup like a woman, and takes charge of things 😁

Must be nice. That’s the thing—I *have* accepted it, but I still can't wrap my head around it. It's like, I'm miserable either way. Dating girls? Nothing. Being with guys? Well, that's just how things are. I'm honestly at a loss.

Look, buddy—go check yourself into a clinic in rural Ohio for a couple of years, and if you still feel this way after that, just do us all a favor and end it.

Look, just try to realize it isn't your fault. It’s just those primitive jerks who have all these unresolved issues—doesn't even have to be sexual stuff—so they just use anyone different as an excuse to dump their emotional trash on you. 🙂
It might not help much, but man, I really hate seeing people hate themselves just because they don't fit someone else's mold. I guess, honestly, you'd probably benefit most from talking to a therapist right now, just to learn how to accept yourself and maybe figure out how to tolerate other people.
There is nothing shameful about who you are, despite everything those hicks have been shouting at you. You have every right to fall in love and be loved. It's just... well, we live where we live, and things still aren't as accepted as they should be here.

Take the case of Edmund Smith, if you will; he serves as living proof that change is indeed possible. For a stretch of eleven years—from the age of thirteen all the way until he hit twenty-four—he lived a homosexual lifestyle. Fast forward to today, where he is now thirty-six and enjoys a perfectly happy marriage (a heterosexual one, just so we aren't misinterpreting things 😁).

The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby

Precisely what you just pointed out was the very thing that haunted him. He found himself yearning for genuine love and true contentment, because in the gay lifestyle, in perhaps 99.9% of instances, there is this pervasive sense of promiscuity—a sort of aimless, disoriented chasing from one man to the next, an attempt to somehow fill an emotional void that simply refuses to be filled.

There is a profoundly fascinating statement made in the first video, occurring at the 6 minute and 23 second mark:

It's not so much about sex. It's about looking for love ... BUT from the wrong genre and it doesn't work. You know. It's an irony - we call ourselves "gay" and origin meaning of "gay" is "happy", but I was never happy ... I was never happy. And looking around at ... many, many people I know ... I still have lots of, lots of gay friend who I truly, truly love and have fantastic relationships with ... you know, healthy relationships ... and I've not met one who is gay and happy ... never.

Some people go through identity crises, so I assume there are cases where orientation shifts over a lifetime, though you could argue they were never "truly" gay to begin with, whatever that implies.

The scientific consensus is pretty much that once a sexual orientation is established, it doesn't change. There have been attempts by certain hardline religious groups to force that change, but the results were disastrous—mostly just leaving people more traumatized.

It’s interesting how 90% of the people pushing the idea that orientation can be altered are backed by some kind of religious faction.

Have you ever actually been head over heels for a girl? Ever been in a long-term relationship with one? To me, it looks like gay guys can fall in love with women, they just don't care about the sex part. That's how it comes across from you.

Forget those principles for a second; the guy is facing a real, tangible problem. Whether you make waves or not, that isn't going to fix itself.

Maybe the guy is dealing with something genuine, or maybe he’s just a troll looking for a reaction. How am I supposed to know? If this is a legitimate struggle, I can't really offer much help because I don't know if orientation is something that can actually change. redharbor9 and you both claim it isn't, which seems to be the consensus among most people who speak out about this; meanwhile, Spitzer believes it might be possible, even if it's an uphill battle. Personally, looking at it from a purely logical standpoint, I don't see why it would be "impossible." It's likely incredibly difficult, sure, but there isn't some law of physics preventing it. I'm not one to make such absolute, categorical statements. 😬

I think that word "believes" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Here's the reality: every single attempt at this has flopped. Anything that actually "works" is just someone masking their behavior, not changing who they are deep down. Eventually, they snap, and things get even uglier.

Look, logically speaking, I don't see why anyone's calling this "impossible." Sure, it’s probably a massive uphill battle, but there isn't some law of physics out there making it a literal impossibility. I wouldn't be throwing around those kinds of absolute statements if I were you. 😬

It depends on how you look at the logic. Changing sexual orientation is one thing, but changing behavior is another. Orientation involves the emotional side of things, whereas behavior is just about the sex.

Of course you can force someone to act straight, marry, and have kids. But eventually, everything just snaps. And when it does? You're screwed. I've heard countless stories like this, and they always end the exact same way: years of intensive therapy and psychiatric care. Not to mention the absolute wreckage it leaves behind for the rest of the family. It’s a disaster.

So, maybe what we really need is a straight volunteer willing to try being gay for the sake of research. If they succeed, we could assume the reverse is also true, right? Problem solved. 😬

The issue is your use of the word "fact." That isn't actually a fact, because those kinds of studies aren't even conducted anymore—they're considered totally unethical.

It seems to me you’ve taken the opinion of a *scientist* (and a highly respected one at that) and dismissed it as mere "belief"—even though it's actually expert opinion—while treating your own stance as an absolute "fact."

Plus, you're being biased. 😍

That's a common, unfounded objection. We don't have a way to read minds yet; how are you supposed to judge whether a change is just in behavior or also in "orientation"? Just because it feels that way to you? If someone claims they've changed their orientation, they're obviously lying, right? 😬 Look, Spitzer believed him; I don't see why I should find your opinion more relevant than his.

Emotional makeup isn't written in the stars, nor is it set in stone. People can change. Sometimes, quite drastically.

Just because you know many such stories doesn't prove that this is how it works in every single case. Something a scientist would surely know. Actually, I'm confident you do know. 😬

🤷 If you can actually find enough volunteers for that, then it’s a brilliant idea. You might even become famous. Personally, I wouldn't mind participating, and I won't jump to conclusions about what the results might show. 😬

(Though, if you're asking, I probably wouldn't step up as a volunteer myself. 😈)

I still have lots of, lots of gay friend who I truly, truly love and have fantastic relationships with ... you know, healthy relationships ... and I've not met one who is gay and happy ... never.

Terrible stereotypes—you find that same pattern of promiscuity in straight relationships as well as gay ones; there are no exceptions there...

The data mostly suggests that in more tolerant, open countries—think Scandinavia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, or Germany—there is actually less promiscuity. Why? Because gay individuals have full rights, the community accepts them, they have places to go out, ways to meet people...

whereas in conservative countries, you see way more instances of these "emotional voids" precisely because of that rejection and lack of acceptance...
