I’m 20 years old, incredibly outgoing, and I love meeting new people. I’m a social butterfly through and through—I live for a good laugh and a great conversation. But here’s the catch: I never actually go out. Aside from spending maybe one or two weekends a month with my boyfriend, my social life is non-existent. Even though I’m always striking up conversations and being upfront with people, nobody ever invites me to anything.🤷 Occasionally, I might get an invite for a quick coffee, but when it comes to weekend plans? Crickets.
Here’s a perfect example of how this works: A friend and I planned to hit up a club together. Out of nowhere, another friend showed up, and they both suddenly made up some excuse about having to leave just thirty minutes after arriving because of a birthday party. They bailed, leaving me to ride a bus all the way across Los Angeles because it felt ridiculous to head home just an hour after getting there.
A few days later, I see them posted online at the exact same club I was supposed to be at.
What is wrong with me?😕 I’m communicative, I’m open, and I’m definitely not stuck-up or conceited. Yet, for some reason, I just don't seem to be anyone's type of person to hang out with.😢

Maybe they knocked them all out in those thirty minutes or so.🤷

This is peak stupidity—they need an excuse for a birthday? They could have come up with something far more plausible. In situations like this, you end up bringing along someone who wasn't even invited, and honestly, who’s actually going to complain about one extra person showing up anyway?

So, do you actually invite anyone to hang out? Or do you just meet someone and sit there waiting for them to make the first move?

Do you have any girlfriends (besides the one you mentioned)? Do they actually go out?

Maybe you're just being too open and drawing too much attention, or maybe you just love being the center of the spotlight and they can't handle it. If you really feel like they have no reason to dodge you, then go find some new girlfriends. Cheers!🙄

I went through a similar struggle when I started college. Suddenly, I found myself drifting away from my old social circles, watching everyone else head out for nights on the town while I felt increasingly isolated. For a few months, I actually convinced myself there was something fundamentally wrong with me—that I was being cast aside by the group. It was a pretty heavy period. But looking back, that phase was actually quite formative. I eventually realized that I wasn't actually interested in the party scene; I was just following the crowd because I lacked the backbone to say no. Once I stopped letting peer pressure dictate my schedule, I grew a lot stronger. Nowadays, I have zero interest in the constant rotation of outings; I only show up for the big milestones, like birthdays or alumni reunions. Those few months of self-doubt were ultimately a waste of energy, but they taught me who I really am.☕

Look, honey, there are a dozen different reasons why they’re icing you out. It could be that they’re just stuck up because you don't fit their little "aesthetic" or whatever superficial standard they've cooked up for themselves. Honestly, it might just be small-town mentality—you know, those people who are terrified of branching out, so they cling to their existing circle like a life raft because making new friends feels too much like work. Or, if we're being real, maybe it's because you actually have something going for you, and you're inadvertently stepping on their toes by being a bit of a threat to their ego...😛Just chew on that for a second, okay? My advice is to go find a crowd that actually gets you and cut that high-maintenance queen off immediately, because from where I'm sitting, there isn't a single bright future in trying to make that work.

Just find yourself a boyfriend and you'll be out on the town constantly. Works like a charm for me! 😉 Uh, what's the matter? Are you all going to get jealous just because she finally found someone? You won't stop her,
she's done with all of you.

Start calling people yourself. Organize something. If you're really as outgoing and social as you say, it’s pretty weird that no one is reaching out to you. Maybe you talk too much and you're actually a bit exhausting (honestly, those aren't the types of people I invite out 😁)

I reach out to them a week in advance, but nobody will—or can—make the effort. I didn't mean to imply I’m some chatterbox while everyone else just sits there in silence. It’s just how I am. When I meet someone new, I prefer to be approachable, communicative, and open.
When I’m out—though I don't go out much—I’ll kick off a conversation once the group goes quiet, usually picking a topic I know will get people talking. Last Saturday night, we were at a coffee shop when one friend went to the restroom and just never came back; she went straight home instead. Her excuse? She was terrified of what people would think if they saw her with me. Look, I'm not ugly or repulsive. In fact, I’d say I’m quite attractive.
Then there's the other one who shut me down simply because I earn my own money while they're still being bankrolled by their parents.
It’s starting to mess with my head. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of social friction?😢

No. I tell them I’m trying, but I just keep getting rejected.
To be honest, I have people in my life, but they aren't "real" friends. They aren't the ones you can call at any hour, the ones who will actually show up, or the ones who won't flake on a quick coffee. It turns out they're just acquaintances, nothing more.

Maybe you're just so hot that guys are staring at you, and your "friends" are just salty because nobody looks at them. I had a few buddies who pulled similar crap back in the day, so I just cut them out of my life entirely.

Here's another example: a friend and I planned to hit up a club, then suddenly another girl shows up and they both make up this lame excuse about only being able to stay for thirty minutes because they have to get to some birthday party.

I've got an idea 🙂

Why don't you just ask them straight up what's going on? Just be honest with them whenever they're actually feeling up for a chat. Honestly, it might be better to pull one of them aside for a private, one-on-one talk. No pressure, no "interrogation" vibes.
That's the only way you'll figure out what the actual issue is. It might be something you're doing, or maybe you'll realize it's just pure jealousy on their end... maybe you're just so perfect that it drives them crazy...
Anyway, if you do end up asking them, let us know. We're all dying to hear how it goes...

I’m with whatever was said in the post above.
I mean, what do you actually have to lose? At the end of the day, being straight with people is usually the best way to go anyway. 🙂

I asked my boyfriend to find out since he knows some of those—I don't even know how to describe them—guys who always seem to show up whenever he's hanging out with them.
Apparently, I'm not "one of them," though I have no clue what that means. 🤷 It's not like I'm some billionaire or living in poverty, either.
There's definitely a pattern here. The exact same thing happened back in middle school and again during high school. Unfortunately, it's happening now too. 😢

So you’re saying they aren't even on your level?? Is that what she said?? Look, I can't speak for you, but honestly, I'd rather just stay home and rot than waste my energy trying to impress people like that. It just makes you look desperate, man. Get it together. So the girl goes out with you, then ditches to "go to the bathroom" just to head home? 😲Is it just me, or is that straight-up pathological???

@Nicholas Sullivan63 - In theory, sure, it sounds fine. But in reality? Total garbage...

It’s likely just that you aren't quite the pretentious social climber they want you to be. They probably view themselves as being out of your league, and since you don't play along with their little act, you're essentially ruining their carefully curated image.
In other words, you just don't have that same "cool" factor they do.🙄

I don't see why there has to be such an immediate rush to reduce women to nothing more than their physical descriptions.🙄

Whatever issue might be brewing here, the author really ought to handle it herself. Instead of letting things fester online, she should just grab those girls for a coffee or meet up with them somewhere out in the real world to hash it out.
If they keep turning us down, we should just move on, find a new crew, and call it a day. Simple as that.
Look, they aren't the only girls in town. Honestly, it’s much better to just be on your own for a while and focus on finding some actual, high-quality friends rather than trying to force a connection with someone just for the sake of it.
