A buddy of mine over in North Mexico wants to send me some money via Western Union. I’m currently blocked from using certain services here in the States—would that be an issue when it comes to actually receiving the funds? Thanks!

Hey there,

I’ve got someone reaching out from Germany who wants to purchase one of my items, and they’re insisting on sending the funds via western union, so I find myself wondering if this is actually a safe move for me as the recipient.
They told me all I need to provide is my full name and then they’ll hand over a code, which supposedly allows me to just head down to the local post office and pick up the cash without any hassle, but I can't help feeling a bit uneasy—is there really absolutely no risk involved for me here?

I honestly think he’s the one taking the bigger gamble here. His plan would be to send you the cash first, let you go ahead and withdraw it, and then have you ship out the product afterward

Western Union is asking me to verify my identity, so they sent over an envelope. It said I should either mail back a letter or just upload my info and a photo of my ID online. I ended up tossing the whole thing because I just gave up on the process.

Now I need to use them again, but where can I find more details about skipping the physical envelope part?

Greetings. I find myself pondering a logistical curiosity: is it actually feasible for someone to send funds via Western Union directly to my bank account, thereby sparing me the tedious necessity of physically visiting an agent location to collect the cash in person?

I can't say for certain, but honestly, I don't think that's how they operate.

That’s just not happening. Honestly, tell that person they should probably just stick to using Wise instead.
The way I see it—if they go that route—the funds will land directly in your account, and you’ll likely end up saving a decent chunk of change on fees in the process.

It’s been a while since I last used Western Union—I just hopped onto their site and realized the whole interface has changed. I was trying to send some Euros like I used to, but now it's calculating everything in US dollars and hitting me with a massive $200 conversion fee on a $2,000 transfer. Is there any way to get those old rates back, or is this just the new reality? They've completely messed up the Euro transfers I used to handle so easily—plus, it's confusing because before, my recipient in Mexico could just pick up Euros, but now it's forcing a conversion into Dinars immediately. Why the sudden change?

Besides Western Union, their exchange rates are absolute garbage. Plus, they’ve basically started flagging people and blocking transactions if you try to pick up more than one transfer in a row—claiming it's for "security reasons" or whatever.
I had a payment from Canada get canceled on me (I'm based in Mexico), and I've been stuck waiting for nearly two months now just for Western Union to return the funds to the guy so he can actually resend them.
And the kicker? I already shipped out the goods the second he sent me the MoneyGram info.

I haven't dealt with currency conversion before—previously, I was just sending Euros over to Mexico, and the recipient could choose to pick up either Euros or Dollars depending on what they needed. Now, suddenly, they won't let me send Euros at all, only USD, and they're hitting me with terrible exchange rates. What happened to the Western Union site? It feels like everything has been completely overhauled overnight.

I wouldn't know about that specific issue. My clients are pretty much used to paying me through Western Union, so a while back I had a guy send some money to my wife, and she was able to withdraw Euros without any drama. That was maybe two weeks ago. The transfer came from Canada, though, so I'm not sure what kind of currency the Canadian guy actually sent.

The sender likely sent dollars because they've started checking which currency is standard for the destination country—if you're sending USD, they apply a terrible exchange rate to balance things out. It wasn't always like this; you used to just pay the exact amount on your card plus a $3 fee.

Try Change Wu, or maybe just stick with MoneyGram.

It’s really no big deal—I don't actually work with them much anymore—but a friend of mine wanted to send something via Western Union, so I decided to check things out since he was asking how everything has changed lately.

Has anyone tried sending money online through Walmart? I’m curious if you've noticed their new conversion rates—it used to be so straightforward, like sending USD to Mexico where you'd just get the exact amount you sent minus a tiny $3 fee, and that was that.

I’m pretty sure the fees shift depending on which agent you decide to go through. Here are the current rates for the mail services...

Hey everyone, I have a quick question for the group... When you're picking up a transfer, specifically if it's a relatively small amount—something under $333—do they actually require you to show a driver's license or some kind of official ID? Or is it enough to just provide your full name and the transaction code?

Does anyone happen to know if there are any specific services for receiving payments where you don't have to deal with showing an ID at all?
