Sometimes there just isn't any logic behind how banks crunch their numbers.
My husband’s experience was kind of weird—one day he’d see an offer for a quick personal loan on his online banking app, and then it would just vanish the next. I actually went down to our local Chase Bank branch to ask my personal banker about the specific criteria they use to approve those little loans, and honestly? He told me that even for us folks working inside the branch, it's all a bit of a mystery 🤷. So, it’s entirely possible you're running into that same "black box" situation with your installment plan limit.

So, back in December, they approved me for a $333 overdraft limit for installment purchases (which was a lifesaver when I was a student). Fast forward to today, and I’m checking my Ally Bank app only to see they slashed it down to $67. 😲😲 What am I even supposed to put on installments for $67? 🙄I know they cut limits if you don't use them, but doing that after only a month? How do I get it bumped back up to $333? Should I call them or just head into a branch...?

Also, a quick question for anyone using a student Amex. My statement for last month just generated, and the due date is January 12th. I've got the cash sitting in my checking account ready to go, but it hasn't been pulled yet—it said in the portal that they auto-debit from my account, so I'm confused about 🤷. Does it just hit on the 12th?

they'll just pull it from your checking account on 1/12...

I’ve been using this card for a while now—pretty happy with it, honestly. They gave me a bit of a hard time at first regarding the approval process, though. Took a few months to finally get sorted out.
If I had one gripe, it’s that I wish they partnered with more retailers. But hey, whatever... 🙂Maybe that works in my favor. 😁
So far, I’ve used it at Walmart, Target, and Dollar General. The best part? That first installment doesn't even hit for a month. 😍
Just a heads-up: you have to hit a minimum purchase amount of $167. My current credit limit is $1667, which includes my overdraft allowance.
My initial limit for that "installment plan" service was only 600-$233, but if you call them up, they'll bump it up. You basically pick your own number. The maximum you can go is just whatever your total overdraft limit allows.

So there aren't any interest charges or fees involved? If I'm reading this right, what exactly makes it a "free" loan then?😕

Yeah, exactly—it’s basically just a way to swap out those old-school checks.

It’s basically a check advance 🙂 except with one big catch—with checks, you get the cash right now. This? You're waiting a month.
Plus, there aren't any fees 🙂

An installment was pulled from my account today. It wasn't a massive amount.
roughly $34. I was under the impression the payment wouldn't hit until tomorrow, so I hadn't transferred enough funds yet.
My balance ended up about $5 short, which pushed me into a negative balance slightly beyond the allowed limit. What's the standard procedure for this now?

There isn't really a "procedure."
Just toss some cash into your account and they'll settle it themselves.

Quincy:
I don't know what you're trying to get at here—is this some kind of joke? You can't just drop a single word and expect me to do the heavy lifting for you. What's the point? Just say what you mean. kaže:
So, they finally gave me the green light at the beginning of December. $333 They’re hitting me with fees for installment plans now—which, by the way, was a total lifesaver back when I was a broke student. So, I’m checking my Ally Bank account today and I see they’ve actually slashed my limit down to... $67. 😲😲 I mean, what would I even do with... $67 Should I go with the installment plan? 🙄I heard they’re cutting overdraft protection if you don't use it—but seriously, in just a month? How am I supposed to bump my limit back up in time? $333So... what's the move here? Do I call them up first—or just show up at the branch and deal with it in person?

Quick question for anyone using an American Express student card. My statement for last month just generated yesterday—due date is January 12th. I’ve already got the cash sitting in my checking account ready to go, but they haven't pulled it yet. Why the delay? I could've sworn the portal said they’d automatically debit it from my account... so what gives? 🤷Or do they just wait until the 12th to strip it?
Give them a call at 1-800-365-365—you can grab all the other details about this card there, too. Simple enough, right? 🙂

Daniel Gonzalez4 said:So, I went back and double-checked everything. My overdraft limit is sitting at roughly 1.7 times my monthly salary, while the limit for installment purchases is only about 0.23 times what I make. It’s not like I’m some deadbeat—I maintain my account perfectly, I have maximum credit innovation, and I actually use a whole bunch of their different services. Honestly, the only explanation I can see for this is that they’ve capped me just because I don't actively use those specific features.

George Barrett35, I wasn't saying the service itself is useless—I was saying that with a limit this low, it’s practically useless.

You probably haven't used it, and that's why they lowered it; banks tend to scale back those limits for people who don't touch them just to free up reserves. If you actually want to use the full amount, just give that 1-800 number a call and you could have it cleared in a day or two—or, if you use a small portion of what you have now, the full limit should reset in a few days...

Instead of my credit limit increasing on January 31st as promised, my balance actually dropped by 😢(
. Now I’m sitting in an even deeper hole. Once my paycheck hits, they’re going to claw back another 700-$267 😢

It seems reasonable to me, especially since we don't really carry credit cards and there are always those random moments when we need to pay in installments, plus checks are basically becoming a relic of the past anyway. When I first heard about this, I actually headed over to Microsoft to see if they offered anything similar, and the woman there told me, "Yeah, they do, but they only offer that installment plan to a select group of clients based on their own internal assessment." It’s almost like they treat it like some kind of exclusive Gold American Express card. 🙄

...my current credit limit sits at $267, which is significantly lower than my actual overdraft allowance... though, to be fair, I haven't even tapped into that yet... so, if I were to call them up and request an increase, would they simply grant it without much fuss?
...also, does anyone happen to know if one can manage a Maestro card via installments at a Kroger? I’ve been scouring the internet, but I can't find any clear information regarding their specific payment terms.

Exactly—you call them up and they'll bump you up to the max overdraft limit. I didn't see Get groceries on the Chase Bank list, but maybe check with someone at the entrance—they might have added that payment option later on.

Just give them a ring on their toll-free number, and they should be able to email you a full list of all the businesses that accept installment plans on that card...
Usually, they have that kind of info available, I actually just had a list sent over to me recently 😉

How does the installment plan work with Chase Bank? Do I just show them my debit card at the register? Or am I going to be stuck dealing with more paperwork... And are there any hidden fees involved?

-First, you just gotta check what your limit actually is—you can swing by a Chase Bank branch or hit up an ATM, personally I just look at my overdraft protection amount... if it shows up as zero even though you know you have an authorized overdraft, just give them a call on their customer service line
- then you just track down a shop that’s part of their installment program
- grab whatever you need and tell them you want to put it on a Chase Bank payment plan
- it really just depends on how many months they'll let you stretch it over, but basically they split the bill up and it just gets pulled from your account automatically every month

The only real headache is that you can't really pay it off early if you suddenly come into some extra cash...
