Aha. So, can you actually see that limit on your Chase Bank online portal? And if you don't have that limit set up... does that mean installment plans are completely off the table?

You can check your balance on the Chase Bank app, and it’ll show you exactly what you have. If it says $0.00, you aren't set up for installment plans, but if you have an overdraft protection limit, just give them a callβ€”they'll probably approve that for you too.

You might want to check your online banking app first...
if you don't see anything there, give them a call, because apparently they've changed things and only issue those cards upon request nowβ€”I used to have one sitting there just to cover my insurance, but then they went ahead and canceled it without much warning, so I had to get on the phone with Chase Bank to sort it all out...

If someone could please provide some clarity here...
To give you the full pictureβ€”I’m currently using a Chase Bank Maestro credit line with an approved overdraft limit of $4000, which I’ve nearly exhausted (lost my job recently, so I had to dip into it for the absolute essentials). On top of that, I have an approved installment plan option for amounts up to $1333...
Specifically, I’ve already used $11,800 of that overdraft, leaving me with a remaining balance of just $67. Now, to make matters worse, my car broke down and I need to cover parts totaling $400 (which I’d prefer to pay via installments)...
My question is this: will I actually be able to utilize the installment plan for these repairs, given how little liquidity I have left in my account? I tried calling their customer service line, but they basically brushed me off, claiming they aren't allowed to handle anything over the phone...

You can definitely opt for installments, but there's a catchβ€”your monthly payment can't exceed $67. Essentially, when you're setting up an installment plan, you need to have enough cash sitting in your account to cover that very first payment upfront.

That’s just wrong. You don't need the first payment sitting in your account right away since the first installment doesn't even hit until a month after you buy it. Buying on credit isn't about what's in your balance at this exact second. The only thing that actually matters is that you aren't overdrawn.

And if you just lost your job, keep in mind they'll probably slash or completely kill your overdraft limit pretty soon, which means your credit limit for installments will tank too.

It’s the truth. Even though that first installment doesn't actually hit your account until a month after you buy it, the bank won't even authorize the installment plan unless you have at least enough cash on hand to cover that first payment right away. Feel free to check for yourself..

Just checked, and the purchase went through without a hitch. I had $4.50 available on my account, and the card cleared for $300 split over six monthly installments... It makes zero sense, though. The first installment doesn't even hit until next month, yet you could basically walk into a Chase Bank tomorrow and withdraw that entire available balance. If it wasn't authorized and held, how is it already showing up as available? πŸ˜‰

I don't see much point in double-checking anything; I already know how this works because I’ve pulled the exact same move on installment plans dozens of times. I've walked away with purchases even when my account was sitting at zero, and it went through without a single hiccup.

...hmmm... I've been using my Mastercard debit card to handle installment plans for quite a while now, juggling a couple of active purchases at the moment. My old card expired this September, so I headed down to the branch yesterday to sort out a replacement, only to find they've swapped the branding entirely. It’s no longer a Maestro; it’s a Visa nowβ€”all colorful and branded with the JPMorgan Chase logo and Visa PayWave. The folks at the bank claim this change is due to their new international ownership structure, implying I can now withdraw cash from any ATM across Europe without fees, but frankly, that's beside the point. What I actually care about is how I'm supposed to utilize those installment options when the sign on the shop door explicitly says: JPMorgan Chase Mastercard debit card up to 12 installments?πŸ˜•

...and here comes the joy...

I’m attempting to log into my online banking, only to be greeted by this message: ''You do not have access to the application due to your current service type or incorrect authorization credentials. If you believe you should have access, please attempt the authorization process again, ensuring all entered details are correct.''

So, where does that leave me?

To get into your online banking, you just need to plug in your new Visa card number along with that one-time passcode it spits out.

Got questions about using your Mastercard debit card or Visa on a payment plan? Just call their toll-free line at 1-800-365-365.

Every merchant knows by now that you can swap that Mastercard installment plan for a Visa one and the transaction will go through just fine....

As for online banking, you’ll have to wait about 24 hours for the system to actually register the new card as active...

Once I insert the token and power it on, his screen displays "Visa out." I hit SIGN, it dutifully prompts me for my PIN, and then shows "Pin OK," yet the code generated alongside my new Visa card number on the online banking portal simply fails to work. Thanks for the free phone call. I’m honestly not sure if the 24-hour window has actually passed yet, so I suppose I'll just head back and try it again.

If you see 'Visa auth' pop up, don't hit SIGN. You need to enter the CODE and then your PIN. SIGN is just for when they want extra digits before the PIN during payment authorization or some other request.

...I did press code, I just typed the wrong number. I know the difference between code and sign; I use my online banking app daily for everything.

...It seems that old theory about the 24-hour waiting period was right, because it's working normally now. Honestly, I think I just had it memorized from using my old Mastercard every single day, and now I'm stuck having to manually type in this new one. πŸ™‚But it works, so everything is fine.

...So, the merchants have been notified that it isn't a Maestro anymore, but rather a Visa installment plan, right? I assume I don't need to worry since I can see they've already approved the purchase amount, minus what I've already spent.

Exactly. Every cashier out there finally knows that you can use a Mastercard debit card or a Visa on an installment plan now.πŸ˜‰

Hey everyone, quick question for the groupβ€”I’m currently using a Mastercard through my student banking package. I was wondering, am I still able to buy things on an installment plan if my checking account happens to be overdrawn?

If you hit an unauthorized overdraft, you lose your safety net and have to cough up the whole damn amount immediately... How deep in the hole are you?

Technically, you can drift about 10 percent past your approved overdraft limit, but you really need to settle things up by the 15th of the month to make sure you're back within your authorized boundsβ€”for instance, if you're sitting at a deficit of $3.25, you might find yourself reaching $3.75.
