EDIT: My kid is graduating high school this year. I organized a late-night hike to a local shrine with the priest, bringing guitars, music, and prayer. The kids are actually pretty hyped for it. 😉

I’m genuinely trying to figure it out here—where exactly did I go wrong?

You messed up when you took the path of least resistance to satisfy some kid's whim, instead of standing your ground and giving what you actually thought was appropriate.

He’s still just a kid being raised by pretty clueless parents. What’s your excuse?

Look, my excuse is simple: I’m not about to waste my breath trying to explain life to some 14-year-old kid who hasn't even hit puberty yet—he probably wouldn't get half of it anyway. Besides, it's not my business to step in and play parent to someone else's kid, no matter how much of a disaster he might be. And let's get one thing straight—I didn't blow my life because of a little extra cash. I knew exactly how this whole mess was going to end from the very beginning.

It's pretty obvious this isn't actually about some kid failing to understand, his parents' parenting style, or your bank account. This is about you and your role as a friend.

What? I'm the problem? Look, I agreed to be the godfather—I laid out exactly how I view the whole role. It’s not just about showing up, buying some overpriced gift, and calling it a day. To me, being a godfather means being that reliable safety net for the kid—someone they can turn to when things get messy or if they need to talk about something they aren't ready to bring to their parents. Basically, I'm an extra set of hands for the parents while the kid is little, and hopefully, a lifelong friend as they grow up. But instead, it went the complete opposite way. I gave the kid a gift, and almost immediately after the ceremony, everything just evaporated. No more good vibes, no more talking—nothing. Not from the kid, and not from his parents either. So what am I supposed to do? Beg them for a conversation to explain why this behavior is trash? Yeah, right... As if. To top it all off, his parents actually admitted they wanted someone else entirely, but since the boy insisted on me, they just rolled with it. Maybe I *am* the problem, but I'm certainly not wasting my breath trying to convince people they're wrong—especially them. That's just a losing battle.

The issue is you'll ditch your own principles just to please everyone else.
I won't elaborate further. ☕

I’m looking for some ideas on what to give as a gift for a First Communion or Confirmation—just as a regular guest, mind you, not as the godparent.

Fair enough, but what kind of budget are we actually talking about here? Like, how much does it take if you're traveling solo versus, say, a family of four?

So, an old elementary school buddy called me up to invite me to his kid's First Communion party... caught me totally off guard and I couldn't really find a way out of it 🐔

I've seen a little kid like this maybe twice in my life, and honestly, I have zero clue how any of this works... I'm assuming people bring gifts 🤷

The extra complication here is that this family is loaded—the kid is already rocking designer labels and is decked out from head to toe 🤦 basically, I'm expecting top-tier tacky behavior, total trash, and just blatant showing off 🙂

Now, since I've already stepped into this mess, I don't want to offend anyone or disappoint them by looking like I don't know the customs... or look like I'm judging their values 🙂

Any advice? Would bringing some flowers and maybe a book be enough? (I'm more of a book person) 😵 But what kind of book? 🙂

Help, please 😕

If I were you, I'd just bring some flowers and a nice bottle of perfume. 🙂

thanks for the tip, hadn't really thought about that🙂

hm, I guess I'd need to figure out which scents girls actually like these days—though honestly, she probably has everything under the sun the second it hits the shelves at Sephora...

plus, I don't really hang out with kids much, so I have no clue what's considered cool anymore😁

Exactly—picking a perfume is just like picking a book... you have to know her tastes, and since you don't know her all that well, it's hard to make a smart call, isn't it?🤔
But flowers? You can't go wrong there!🙂

Would the book be any good, just speaking generally? Maybe I should just pick something based on my own gut feeling since I have no clue what she’d actually find interesting 😁

If any moms or dads happen to stumble onto this thread... if you've got daughters around this age... feel free to drop some book recommendations here 👍

I gave some advice on a similar topic recently—the Holy Bible.

Look, I get it, buying something like that for a Confirmation sacrament feels a bit extra 😬 but I’m sticking to my guns. 🥳

So, my husband and I are actually serving as the godparents for these twins this year—his brother and sister's kids.
We didn't even bother asking them what they wanted because, let's be honest, you can't go wrong with a solid gift that actually lasts. We ended up pulling the trigger on two high-end bicycles; we skipped the gadgets since that felt a bit tacky, but these bikes are top-tier, serious quality, and yeah, they definitely cost us a pretty penny.
And on top of all that expense, we’re also stuck footing the bill for the whole youth group celebration.

thanks, that red leather-bound one might actually work 👍
hopefully the rest of the guests just stick to jewelry... wouldn't want the kid showing up with a whole library of Bibles😁
