They flagged my American Express application because they need a photo of my new ID—I was using a temporary one while I was getting everything sorted. Does anyone know if it still takes about two weeks for them to actually mail out the physical card?

If I wanted to move $33 from my checking account over to an American Express student card using the Chase Mobile app (via the Cards > New Payment menu, etc.), would that trigger any extra fees? And how long does it usually take to clear...

One more quick thing regarding online shopping—stuff like buying games on Steam or Blizzard, or hitting up eBay and similar sites—which card is better to use? My standard Visa or this American Express student one?

Sorry if these questions seem a bit basic 🙄

You won't be able to make payments toward your American Express... nothing happens. You've got a limit of about $200... whatever you spend just gets deducted from your available credit. Keep in mind, this is a credit card, not a debit card linked directly to your checking account. It might actually be better to use a Visa instead, especially if someone manages to get a hold of your account details; you don't want to end up overdrawn on your actual bank balance.

There's no commission involved. You're just using that payment to clear your Amex balance.

One more quick one: when it comes to shopping online—stuff like Steam for games, Blizzard, eBay, and sites like that—which card is better to use? Should I go with my Chase Visa debit card or that American Express student card?

Since that student American Express doesn't work outside the US—meaning you can't even use it on international sites—you’re better off just getting a Visa. 😉

I want to know if I can take this student American Express to a place like Target, buy groceries for $17, and just pay with the Amex?

Yeah, you can. It works just like any other shop that takes American Express.

Around the 15th of last month, I put some purchases on an installment plan using my American Express. I need to know when that first payment actually hits. Some people told me it would be the 9th, but it’s already the 10th and nothing has been charged to my checking account yet. -.-

Has anyone here ever gone through the process of taking out a student loan to cover tuition? I'm curious about what kind of paperwork I'll need to get everything sorted out.

Just check your American Express statement. It tells you exactly when the charge hits your bank—usually about a week after the statement closes.

Hey everyone. I need some info if anyone knows. So, I have a student Chase package open (checking account, savings, and an American Express). Recently, a levy hit my checking and savings accounts. When I log into online banking for my checking and savings, they show up as blocked. But nothing for the Amex. My question is, can I still buy things on installments using the Amex up to my limit and pay the monthly bills at the bank? Or is that card blocked too?

So, here’s the deal: I went down to Chase to set up my online banking, and the guy tells me, "Hey, you should just grab this student package; you'll get all the fees waived for $1.75 and you'll even get an American Express." I figured, why not? Fine. But then I head over to pick up my card, only to realize I apparently have a Visa Electron now. Why on earth do I suddenly have three different cards just because of one Visa Inspire linked to my checking account? Which one of these three am I actually supposed to use for shopping online, and what's the point of having an American Express if I've already got this Visa Electron? I am completely lost.

So you've got a checking account, a savings account, and a credit card. That American Express is basically useless if you aren't physically in the States, but you can probably use the debit card for online shopping.
Bottom line: if you don't actually need the savings or credit cards, just leave them alone. Stick to using your checking account.

Hey everyone... I have a quick question for you. I just put some purchases on my American Express, and they told me the charge won't hit until May 9th. The thing is, my paycheck doesn't actually land until May 20th... which means I'll be dipping into an unauthorized overdraft since I'm already sitting at -$333. Is it going to be a major issue? Like, will they freeze my account or anything just because I'm in the red for those few days? Thanks!

I'm not sure if they'll freeze your account right away, but probably not. However, if you overdraw, you're definitely going to get hit with interest. And trust me, those rates aren't cheap.
Your best bet is to just call Chase and ask. But if you've already maxed out that Visa, you're looking at being in the red $1000.

Hey, did anyone else get an email about contract updates or something along those lines lately?

Hi, I have a question. I spent about $333 on my American Express this month. When the bill comes due, I won't be able to pay the full amount—I can cover a bit more than half, roughly $500. What happens if I don't pay the total balance on my American Express this month? Thanks for the help.

Hi there,

I currently have a student banking package with Chase and I also carry an American Express card.
I was wondering, would it be possible to make a purchase using my American Express if the total comes to $2333 and I wanted to split it into 12 or 24 monthly installments?

No way, there’s no possible way the total comes out to more than $667.

If the store lists Visa Electron as an accepted payment method, does that mean I can use this JPMorgan Chase card?
