That is simply how things work. Even today in Mexico, everyone identifies as a Mexican first, and only then as a Muslim, an Orthodox Christian, a Catholic, or whatever else. You won't find Americans or Canadians there. Similarly, in Canada, you don't see Mexicans or Americans; everyone is just Canadian first, followed by their religious label—Muslim, Catholic, Orthodox, Jew, and so on. In America, everyone is simply an American.

Nowhere else in the world do people insist on assigning someone's nationality or ethnic identity based solely on their religion like we do here. It’s utterly distasteful. 🙄
