Look, it isn't cocaine, but it is amphetamine. It’s on the controlled substance list for a reason. Doctors only prescribe it for a handful of very specific indications, and honestly, your doctor has every right to refuse you if they don't think it's necessary. Sure, it hits fast, numbs fear, and gives you that temporary boost of confidence, but at standard medical doses, it shouldn't act like a massive stimulant for your autonomic nervous system or trigger hallucinations like high doses might... though that's a slippery slope. Still, there are consequences. We're talking heart strain, blood vessel issues, dehydration, rapid breathing, insomnia, jitters, and tension. And then there's the euphoria... which begs the question, what happens when you're coming down from it? Regardless, the biggest concern is the potential for psychological dependency. Medical doses are generally too small to cause physical addiction or completely drain your energy reserves like chronic abuse does, but still... I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Even if it helps with social anxiety by making you feel more decisive or upbeat, most professionals agree it's not a long-term solution. Since social anxiety is usually a chronic issue, using a quick fix like this doesn't really solve the underlying problem... it just masks it.🤷Aside from meth, amphetamine shares all the same street names: speed, white, benzedrine, uppers, ice, zip...

Does anyone know of something similar to Lexapro or Ativan that I can just grab over the counter? Looking for something to take the edge off without needing a prescription—any suggestions? Cheers!

You can't. And why is getting a prescription such an issue?

Is it just me? By the way, it's cheaper and easier when you have a prescription. ☕

I’ve been on 30 mg of Paxil for about a month and a half now, along with one 0.25 mg Xanax tablet every morning. This regimen feels manageable enough while I’m still out on medical leave, but I can't help but wonder—how am I actually going to function once I have to head back into the office?

Mary, look, if you haven't been dealing with any major side effects up until now, you’re probably going to be just fine. Honestly, I’m on a cocktail of Adderall, an antipsychotic, and a Xanax—and we're talking doses that would make most people's heads spin—but I still get through my day, hang out with friends, and I've even got my driving test coming up soon. I feel totally normal. The big thing for me is staying far away from alcohol, obviously, and that's pretty much the secret sauce. There's really no reason to be terrified of stepping out and being around people, especially if you actually feel up to it and want to. In fact, finding a job can actually be a huge part of the recovery process if you end up doing something you actually enjoy. 🙂

I’ve been on 5mg of Lexapro for five weeks now, and I’ve also been taking 0.5mg of Klonopin daily (sometimes more if things get hairy). Around week four, everything felt awesome—my mood shot up, I was sleeping like a baby, and the Klonopin seemed to hit just right. But then, out of nowhere, it all tanked. Now I’m feeling like a total zombie and my Klonopin isn't even touching the anxiety anymore. I’ve gone back into my shell, and the jitters are back in full force. My doctor told me to bump up to 10mg, but I tried that for two days and it made my anxiety skyrocket, so I jumped right back down to 5mg.

Is this just because the dose is too low? Or am I supposed to white-knuckle it for at least three months before seeing real results? Maybe this med just isn't my vibe. Why does it feel like I took three steps forward and two steps back? Is that just how this works?

Hey everyone!

Look, Joe, maybe I'm just missing something here, but I honestly don't get how it could have worked perfectly fine at first and then just totally quit on you. I mean, I haven't heard of a situation like that happening before. 🤷

The dosage probably isn't where it needs to be. If your doctor told you to take 10mg, then follow that instruction. If I recall correctly, the max daily dose for Lexapro is 20mg, so 10mg isn't excessive. Stick to the prescription, and if the anxiety gets overwhelming, use the Klonopin as needed until the Lexapro fully kicks in.

Alright, thanks for the input. It’s pretty wild—even after five weeks on 5mg of Lexapro, bumping up to 10mg has me feeling that spike of anxiety, the sweats, and the insomnia all over again. It’s like my body is throwing a bit of a tantrum trying to adjust to the higher dose. Fingers crossed this is just part of the process and it'll all pay off in the end.

It honestly took me a solid two months on Lexapro before I even started noticing the first signs of things looking up. I didn't run into the same issues you did—at least not right out of the gate—though I’ll admit I’m feeling pretty drowsy lately. But honestly? I don't care. As long as I don't slide back into that dark hole I was stuck in before, I can deal with being a bit sleepy.

Girl, I noticed you're taking quite a bit of Ativan, though it looks like you were on more previously. What else are you currently taking, and what are your specific doses?
I take 50 mg Lamictal in the morning
50 mg Faverin
At noon, I take 75 mg Effexor
In the evening, 100 mg Faverin
And I throw in some Xanax here and there since I struggle with insomnia—probably because I get so incredibly sleepy in the afternoons.
I've only been on the Effexor for a week now. Just feeling totally unmotivated.😢

Look, depending on how bad things are, doctors usually suggest 10 or 20 mg of Lexapro. I’m actually on 20 mg myself right now. Even at a dose that high, it takes forever to actually start working, so honestly, it doesn't surprise me one bit that you aren't feeling much from the meds yet.

So, back the year before last, and for a huge chunk of last year too, I was spiraling—just super depressed and anxious, not even getting into the mood swings (🙄 ). Because of all that, I started popping Lorazepam pretty frequently. But here’s the kicker: you get hooked on this stuff so incredibly fast, and before you know it, you’re needing more and more just to feel normal.
After taking it for about six months straight—which, by the way, isn't what you're supposed to do; even the packaging says you shouldn't take it daily for more than a month—I couldn't even feel a 2.5 mg dose.
Around June of last year, I started back on Citalopram. It finally kicked in around August. Since August, I haven't touched any Lorazepam. But then, a few days ago, I felt so freaking nervous that I ended up taking a 2.5 mg dose of Lorazepam. It was my first time since August.

Needless to say, I don't really remember anything for about a day and a half, though other people told me I was acting totally wild. 😁 Thank God I didn't have classes that day. 🤣 Seriously though, everyone, please be careful with anxiolytics. There's nothing wrong with taking them when you need to, but watch how much you're using and stay mindful of your dosage.
