Ladies, quick question... how many cakes should I order for a crowd of 50 to 60 guests?

I really want them served separately—I can't stand seeing those tiered cakes where the bottom layer gets absolutely crushed by the one on top (it always looks so messy to me)....

As for flavors—maybe something like chocolate, fruit, or even cookies & cream? Or what would you all suggest? At almost every wedding I've been to, they seem to serve a Black Forest cake... don't get me wrong, I like it, but I was hoping for something a bit more unique.😁

It really just comes down to the diameter of the cake, though you can always hash out the details with whoever you're ordering from once you get there.
You could go with just one big one, or maybe a set of five smaller ones—it honestly all depends on how much you're looking to feed!

A cake that's 10 inches wide and about 4 inches tall usually feeds roughly 16-18 people...

At our wedding, we went with a classic chocolate Sachertorte and then another one with dark sponge and this amazing white cream—a friend actually gave the baker the recipe for the frosting!

If you want that separate look, I saw this super pretty display once—it was like several cakes arranged in an arc, kind of like this photo here, but spread out a bit more:

When we had 40 people, we basically doubled the number of slices so everyone could have at least two... I think we ended up with about 90 pieces total, which meant we had a full tier. So if you follow that same rule and go for two slices per person, you could easily do three cakes! But honestly, if you're ordering from a pro, they'll know exactly how to handle it and set it up beautifully—our bakery took care of all those little details, and they definitely knew way more about the logistics than we did...

We were all about 15 years old at the time, and I had my heart set on having a tiered wedding cake... Since there weren't any other desserts served, we ended up dividing the cake so everyone could take some home. It was priced by the slice, I believe, at roughly $5.00, so everyone walked away with a pretty generous piece, even though the cake itself wasn't massive. In total, it cost me about $100...

Wait, so if a restaurant is just whipping up their own cakes and pastries... they don't actually need some kind of special certification?

Then there's really no point—that’s what we were told, anyway... they basically said it covers everything under the sun!

I need to make a call on the cake shapes and flavors. My plan is to go with four different varieties—though I’m leaning toward doing exactly that.

We'll order the treats from a bakery in a small town in the Midwest to serve at the hall, and then we can pack them into little boxes to hand out as favors.

I'm looking to whip up some cookies to hand out to guests later on. I guess I'm wondering how many you usually give per person... and does anyone know where I can grab some cheap little gift boxes around here?

You can find them everywhere—in print shops, big-box retailers like Walmart, or those specialized wedding supply stores...

We’re planning on doing three or four different kinds too. One definitely has to be a cheesecake.🙂 We have to head down to the bakery to make our final picks—honestly, I can't wait.

As for the leftovers (the stuff we want to take home), we already cleared it with the hotel. They’re going to pack everything up for us so we can just grab it and go after the reception.😁

Right, I guess I can track those down. But, uh, how many grams do people usually hand out per guest?

A few cookies 😁
it’s really up to you
My mother-in-law used to hand out massive one-kilogram bags to her close relatives—if not more—since she always ended up with a mountain of leftovers. She’d just pass them out the next day when they came over for lunch. In our house, we kept things simple with little boxes, putting maybe six or seven cookies in each.

I realized I still owe everyone my cake review 😍
—just a little late to the party, I suppose—but I wanted to circle back and share some praise. 😁image

That’s actually really impressive! What did it set you back? And how many people did you manage to feed with it?

I honestly have no idea how many people actually helped themselves... :P There was still one extra platter left, and if my math is right, we’re talking about maybe 50 mini cupcakes plus the large cake... People were definitely digging in, but I ended up with two little ones left over and the entire top tier—minus that one slice we snuck earlier, of course... I paid $333 😍

I think my hotel mentioned about 5 ounces is the standard for dinner, but honestly, you can just do whatever you want. 🙂 We also did little gift boxes for the cookies—we probably put about two pounds in each box, but I can't quite remember.

At my venue, they give us about 4 ounces per person, which felt a little light to me, but hey, what do I know? 🤷 It's just that if I want to do the whole cookie giveaway thing, I'll have to go buy them somewhere, so I was wondering what the typical amount per person or per couple usually is... I feel a bit slow here, I've been given plenty of sweets over the years, but I guess I never actually paid attention to the portions.🤣

I wouldn't say my boyfriend and I ever actually walked away with a full pound of cookies to take home; those little boxes always felt kind of light to me, you know? 🤣
And let's be real, half the time they aren't even good, so they just sit in the fridge until someone finally snaps and decides they've gotta go in the trash.
