1. You need to file an objection, not a formal appeal;
2. You'll be looking at court costs of roughly $200—$100 at the very least—plus any potential fines;
3. My advice? Just pay the fine and don't drive when you aren't supposed to...

I haven't paid a cent since (and honestly, I can't even find the paperwork anymore), and now I've received a court summons.

It states...
...regarding whether I agree to swap the fine for community service... or face jail time if I don't.

So, what are the odds I can just pay this thing now and avoid the whole "alternative sentencing" headache?
Is it actually worth asking them to resend the invoice...

Nah, you're better off just heading down there in person to sign the waiver since they haven't actually started enforcing the service yet.

Once they actually get moving on it—assuming the statute of limitations hasn't kicked in first—you can always just settle the fine at any point to shut the whole thing down...

So you're saying if I'm actually ordered to show up and do the time, paying it off—even a year late—cancels the service? Won't someone just look at me and say, "Sorry honey, you aren't digging ditches today!"?

It’s like, every single time you actually go ahead and pay, everything just grinds to a halt...

Decided I’m actually gonna file this appeal... now I just need answers on three things.
First off, the incident happened in downtown Chicago, but the citation was issued by the precinct over in Joliet... do I send my appeal to them or to the main headquarters in the city?
Second, which specific court am I even addressing this to? Is it the Cook County Circuit Court or somewhere else?
Third, look, I know I messed up with the curfew violation (I'm a new driver), but everything else was strictly by the book—no alcohol, no speeding, seatbelts were on. This is my first offense, so I’m looking at a plea for leniency or a reduced fine. Should I play the "I didn't do it" card in the appeal, or what?

Look, if you're aiming for a reduced fine or trying to get them to just give you a warning instead of a penalty, don't go in there claiming you didn't do it... just own up to the mistake and focus on whatever mitigating circumstances you can highlight to make the judge feel bad for you. If you can back those claims up with actual proof—like, if you're a college student, grab a transcript or some enrollment verification—that'll go a long way...

An appeal phrased like that won't hike up your court costs, and you probably won't even be summoned to show up in person...

Hey,

Here’s the situation:

This past Saturday, we had snow on the ground. I was driving after 11 PM... I'm still a relatively new driver. To make matters worse, I'd had a few drinks earlier that evening. At one point on the road—just before the railroad tracks—I had to pull over, and when I tried to pull away, my wheels just spun on the ice.

Right at that exact moment, a police cruiser passed by in the opposite lane.

Everything seemed fine then...

I kept going toward my destination (some club)
I arrived, parked properly, and shut off the engine...
...Since a friend was with me, we started drinking.

Basically, about three or four minutes after I stopped, those same officers showed up and pulled up right next to me.

They started their routine check, looking at my license and registration...

Then came the breathalyzer. I agreed to take it and... clocked in at 0.024.
My friend didn't blow.

For what it's worth, I refused to sign the report.

Now I'm wondering how to draft an appeal. What specific angles should I play?

What am I supposed to tell the judge later?

I'm a student, pretty broke, and have zero income.

Please, help me out.

Thanks in advance.

Can I ask a quick question? My dad just picked up and signed my summons for traffic court today—apparently, I was caught riding my bike without a license, registration, or even a helmet. I was actually planning on being the one to grab it and deal with it, but he beat me to it and signed for it. Is there any way I can play dumb and claim I never got it since I wasn't the one who signed? Thinking about trying to dodge the hearing altogether...

Alright, so is there any way I can push back this hearing? Like, can I just call the courthouse and tell them I’ve got work that day, or maybe claim I'm feeling under the weather...

Back on December 6, 2005, the highway patrol actually showed up at my front door. Apparently, some guy reported me because he claimed I scraped his car in the parking lot outside a restaurant.
Now, look, I’ll be honest—I was at that restaurant that day, but I have absolutely zero memory of hitting anyone's vehicle.
The guy is insisting he has a witness who saw the whole thing happen.

It is true that I had a few scratches on my front bumper, but those were old marks from way before that incident that I just hadn't gotten around to fixing yet.

The police took photos of these "scratches" and sent everything over to the municipal court. A few days later, the verdict comes back:
Because they slapped me with a hit-and-run charge, they’re suspending my driver's license for three months.
Plus, I'm looking at 3 points on my record and $667 some fines.

I hired a lawyer to file an appeal against the ruling, and honestly, since then, I haven't heard a single word. No update, no new notice, nothing—not even a summons for a hearing!
I mean, is this thing just stuck in legal limbo? Has it reached the statute of limitations or something??

Yeah, the statute of limitations is two years from when the violation actually happened... (seriously, I feel like I'm saying this for the hundredth time...)

Don't get all worked up like that, kid. You're way too young to be this stressed out.

Thanks for the info.👍

So, I just got hit with a summons for municipal court. (My old man actually signed for it—I was planning on just tossing it back to stall for time, but clearly, that plan failed miserably).
Now I’m wondering, is there any way to get out of showing up, or what’s the best excuse to use? Also, can I pull the "my dad forgot to give me the notice because I didn't receive it personally" card? Thanks.

Look, my strategy is basically pure chaos. When they finally manage to serve me those papers, I’m just going to sit there and plead the fifth—not admitting a single thing. If they actually try to convict me, I’ll just immediately file an appeal with the State Supreme Court, praying to God that everything just gets tossed out on some technicality or falls into a statute of limitations loophole. Or, if I'm feeling particularly dramatic, I'll pull the whole "heartbroken citizen" routine and beg for community service, even though let's be real, there isn't any meaningful service work available in a city like this anyway. Honestly, if you're still a student, they usually can't squeeze a dime out of you regardless.

What a joke—you really think I can’t charge you anything just because you’re a student? 🙄

So, what’s the daily rate for being behind bars?

Maybe this sounds stupid, but....
Do people actually brush their teeth with toilet brushes, and is all that stuff about getting jumped or worse just some scary crap they throw at you in American movies?
