...In just about a month, several of my friends have had long-term relationships fall apart... I kept feeling bad for them, thinking "that would never happen to me," until it hit me home the day before yesterday. 😢

Still, I’ve got this tiny shred of hope that I can fix things on my end (even if it won't be an overnight fix), so I'm posting here to see if you guys can give me some advice...

Here’s the situation... My girlfriend lives in another city (not too far, maybe about 40 miles away), and since I’m in my final year of college, I’ve been absolutely buried under coursework and responsibilities. All of that meant I could only see her about once a week, which just wasn't enough for her. I’ll admit it—she was right. I totally neglected her and didn't do a great job showing her how much I care. Then, the day before yesterday, she calls me up and says the distance and lack of time finally took its toll. She told me she's started seeing me more as a friend and that we need to break up. 😢 I had a pretty emotional reaction to it, and honestly, I'm a little embarrassed about how I handled myself...

The next day (yesterday), I managed to pull myself together, called her back, and asked: if we take some time apart, and I work on myself to fix the reasons why we were unhappy, could we eventually get back together? She said I definitely should do that work, though she wouldn't promise anything. Her main condition is that I finish my degree and actually find some free time. I told her, "Okay, that's all I needed to hear," and then we ended things...

So, what's my move? I really care about her (there's a lot more to it than I can explain without rambling, and I don't want to overwhelm you guys), and I want to play this smart. I realize this might be the permanent end and there might be nothing I can do, and luckily, my self-esteem hasn't tanked so hard that I feel like she's the only woman on Earth—I just want to do everything in my power to make this work... So,

How long should I wait before calling her again?
Should I do something special for our two-and-a-half-year anniversary, or should I hold off?
Is there anything else I should be doing?

Help me out!

acr, I don't have the energy to wade through all that nonsense you just posted. Honestly, isn't spring the perfect time to finally get over yourself and move on to someone new?

Man, don't be like that.

Back to the topic though—you should probably focus on planning something big for your 2.75-year anniversary. If everything goes smoothly by then...
just keep in mind that the 3.14-year mark will be right around the corner. Just hang in there until then.

Basically, just get over it.

You’re a good man, but you’re being a little reckless here. Of course you need to put together something special for your 2.5-year anniversary 😁, and you really need to carve out more time for her. I know work has been piling up lately, but if you actually care about her—which it seems like you do—then 37 miles doing nothing is basically an insult.
As Michael Fox46 said, you have to fight for love. You really do. Sure, sometimes those battles feel lost before they even begin, but they don't always have to be. Once you've done everything within your power, regardless of how things turn out, at least you can have peace of mind.

You should definitely put together something special for this anniversary. If I were in your shoes, I’d suggest adding a personal touch—something you actually crafted yourself using your own brainpower or whatever else makes you tick. 😉 You really want to show that you care *personally*... assuming, of course, that you actually do. 😉

If you're having a hard time deciding, just have a kid with her... then MARRY HER.👍

Are you absolutely certain that’s the real reason she ended things? Honestly, I once used that whole "I just see you as a friend" line myself, though the truth was I had my eye on someone else entirely. 🙂

What I mean is, if that isn't the actual reason for the breakup, then attending an anniversary celebration could turn into a complete nightmare for both of them—and frankly, it might just be another layer of humiliation for you.

Alright, I guess it looks like I earned my "wedding ring" fair and square 🙂 but honestly, I really cherished that time... It feels like we didn't even scratch the surface of everything we could have experienced together, you know? It’s just one of those things where it felt like "the future had other plans for us."

Just to be clear, I’m not coming from a place of desperation here. I know my worth and I know there are plenty of other women out there. I’m just wondering—how much breathing room should I actually give a girl to process everything on her own? I don't want to rush it, because nobody changes their entire life overnight, but I also don't want to wait so long that all the feelings just fade into nothing...

By the way, who was the one bringing up the 3.14th anniversary... 😁 😁 😁

Nathan Taylor60: I honestly can't believe there's someone else involved... looking back at how she was acting right before things fell apart—like how she kept pushing to go back to that spot where we had our first kiss—it’s obvious she was just trying to jumpstart some kind of spark.

But hey, if her heart is actually set on someone else, I'm not going to hover or make her life difficult. I won't stand in her way.

Don't you dare wait too long. Just leave her alone for eighty years or so—that's usually about right for a situation like this. 🙂
