The admiral, Vietnam—it's likely his own mother didn't love him much... and he ended up dying from love, just that stupid masculine pride. His son fought just to prove himself to her. He loved women in a way that was almost sickly; he couldn't be rough or cause scenes, he was just weak when it came to women... and he felt he could only prove himself to his dad one way: through a brave act, a conscious self-destruction. Death was calling his name, and he was terrified, but he wasn't allowed to be. It wasn't about the courage to die... honestly, everyone needs parents who are at least somewhat on the same page. amen
