Attending a court hearing: Is it open to the public?

Is it actually possible to just walk into a courthouse in a city like Chicago and sit in on a civil trial, even if I’m not some reporter or legal professional, but just an average citizen looking to observe?

It definitely is, though you really ought to give them a heads-up beforehand since most courtrooms are pretty cramped and don't have much room for spectators, but there are certainly larger venues that can accommodate a decent crowd.
I actually caught a hearing regarding a war crimes case last week 😁, which took place over at the federal level, and since they held it in one of those massive courtrooms, it was absolutely packed.

Is it actually possible to sit in on a court hearing? For instance, could I just show up at a county or municipal court tomorrow, check the docket to see when and where a trial is happening, and just watch? I’ve never been to a courtroom before—so I'm a bit unsure—but since I'm a law student, I figured it might be useful to observe some proceedings whenever I have the time.

Most courts stream their proceedings online anyway. 😉
Since you're a student, you should seriously look into signing up for jury duty. It'll be killer experience for your future career.

Thanks—I've thought about it, but I need to wait for an opening, and honestly, dealing with the whole NFIB application process and all those other formalities... 😉 Anyway, how do I go about signing up, based on what was mentioned above?
