The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)

On par with the Snowman in terms of how bad this is.

I don't know about you all, but I'm actually a fan. I dig how they lean into that sense of mystery—it works for me. Honestly, I'm just counting down the days until the sequel hits.

Expectations are a bitch. Aside from the opening which actually looked promising, this movie is just straight-up terrible. There’s absolutely nothing left of the original Cloverfield. Honestly, the only decent parts were those two quick flashes of monsters that don't even matter to the plot... I was expecting a blast, but instead, I got another one of those movies where astronauts just wander around a spaceship and die one by one.

Well, if the beginning is the best part, I’m glad I bailed early. Because that intro was awful. The exposition felt like some cheap AI script stuffed with every tired sci-fi cliché under the sun and rushed through at breakneck speed.

Yeah, I'm with the majority here—this movie had massive potential, but they served us total garbage instead.
Even the way they handled the scene where they realize Earth has vanished felt cheap and poorly executed to me.
They seriously could've written a much tighter plot and ending SPOILER instead of that nonsense about Earth just hiding behind the Sun. 🥱

The only thing "good" about this flick is that it finally explains where those monsters on Earth came from. My big fear is that a fourth installment (or whatever comes next...) will just turn into some generic monster movie where all of America huddles together to fight off giant beasts.

Instead of obsessing over the title, you really should have looked at who was producing this. The second I saw Netflix was involved, I knew exactly what kind of experience I was in for.

Total letdown.

I watched both of them yesterday—this one and Cloverfield Lane. As far as I can tell, neither of them were actually built as sequels to the original Cloverfield; they just feel like random movies or scripts that had a few extra scenes tacked on at the last minute just to force them into this universe... and honestly, you can really see the seams showing.

This whole movie is just a pile of illogical—and frankly unnecessary—plot points and sequences. I’m genuinely left scratching my head over what happened with the monsters, and I still can't figure out if this thing is supposed to be a prequel, a sequel, or some weird parallel universe story compared to the original.

All three are just parallel universes being messed with by that accident involving the Sheppard accelerator out in Cloverfield space. 😳

I mean, you know that's total nonsense. What's next? A romantic comedy about a love triangle between an American woman, a British man, and an Indian man where the Indian man wins her heart, and then in the last five seconds of the movie, you hear a monster roar—bam, now it's Cloverfield?🤣

Boring... I don't see any connection to the first movie, other than that monster falling onto Earth from another dimension.

I thought Cloverfield Lane was actually pretty decent, but I’ve got a bad feeling about this one. Honestly, I’ll probably give it a watch if I’m ever stuck at home bored out of my mind with nothing else to do, but my expectations are basically non-existent.

Hmm, I’m not really feeling these easter eggs—they feel a bit forced, almost like they were slapped into the movie just to say, "Hey, look, it’s all connected," because the actual plot fails to provide any internal logic.

I would have preferred if the character actually fleshed out the narrative connections (if that's even possible here), but instead, I basically just ended up saying, "Well, I don't know, maybe these are three different universes, maybe they aren't, who knows," and "events in one universe might bleed into others, so maybe this happened there or didn't happen here, but who can tell." Honestly, I don't think it's right that after three films, people still have no clue where we are in the timeline or which universe we're even looking at (considering we have three movies and potentially three separate universes at this point).

I think you guys might be overthinking it a bit... a solid movie should work regardless of the time or place...😁

When I consider that the teaser image featured a black hole—which was honestly the only thing that caught my eye... 🤦

The monsters just look like toothy rags.

Even after seeing how much the critics absolutely trashed it, I went in with an open mind since the original is one of my favorites. Honestly, I think the "sequel" works well enough as its own thing—it really shouldn't have been tied to the first movie, and that ending was a choice.

I didn't have high expectations, but I’m still genuinely shocked by how bad this turned out. It feels like Netflix started making a standalone movie, realized halfway through they were crafting an epic disaster that would tank at the box office, panicked, called JJ, and offered him a massive paycheck just to slap the Cloverfield name on it. They basically tried to fake a connection to the original with a few random scenes just to trick people into watching it.

It's just terrible. A total mess of a movie that reminds me of that other recent dud, Life, from 2016—except at least that one had a decent final scene. This one doesn't even have that.

I haven't seen it yet, but if it's anything like 10 Cloverfield lane, then it isn't actually garbage—it’s just not great either.

The movie mostly works for me, though I wasn't a huge fan of how they handled the ending, but I don't want to get too repetitive about my thoughts on the original premise.

To me, it's way more interesting than Cloverfield.
