Hey everyone, hope you're all having a good holiday season.

I could use some advice on a build/upgrade I'm putting together. I'm picking up most parts new, but I'm thinking about recycling a few old ones.

I’m planning to grab the main components from Micro Center, and here’s what the list looks like so far:
MSI H97-PRO, s1150, Intel ® H97, 4 x DDR3, 1 x PCI Express $212

DDR3 4GB (1x4GB) Kingmax, 1600MHz, FLGF x 2 $104 ($208)

Intel 120GB SSD 530, 2.5", SATA III-600, R/W:540/480MB/s $217

Intel Core i5-4460 (3.20GHz,1MB,6MB,84 W,1150) Box $460

From my old gear, I want to keep a 500GB HDD for storage, an SSD to run the OS, and a Radeon HD 4750. My old power supply is a Corsair 450W, which I assume should be enough to cover everything.
It's just for home use—some light gaming on older titles or newer stuff where I don't need maxed-out settings. I've decided to stick with the current GPU for now because money is tight, and from what I've read online, its performance isn't much different from a Radeon R7 250. Also, just a heads up, I'm running this on a 22" monitor.

What's your take on this setup? Is the i5 overkill for this graphics card, or would it make more sense to save some cash and go with an i3-4130 (3.40GHz) instead, then put that money toward an i5 and a better GPU later?

Thanks to anyone willing to help out or drop some constructive feedback. 🙂

Adam Hernandez7 Look, you could always pivot to a cheaper motherboard or just grab an SSD instead (like an Intel 520). If you're dead set on the H97 chipset—which gives you that path toward newer Broadwell chips—you might want to look at the Z97 anniversary edition. It’s priced almost exactly the same as the PRO4, but you get the added bonus of CPU overclocking, which is a nice safety net for later on. Though, to be fair, you can actually squeeze some overclocking out of the H97 boards now via the OC Tweaker settings anyway.

As for getting the most out of that 4750—honestly, even an i3 is overkill for it 🙂—but let's face it: you won't be stuck using that setup forever...

+1 to the i5 processor idea—honestly, it’d be a shame to waste a year or two if you’re just going to end up upgrading your graphics card later and realize the CPU is the bottleneck, right? If you make the jump to an i5 right away, you won't have to deal with those kinds of headaches.

Just an AMD alternative for you. It's basically on par with an i5, but you get the overclocking option too. 👍

1 x DDR3 8GB (1x8GB) Crucial, 1600MHz CL11
1 x Intel 120GB SSD 520, 2.5", SATA III-600, R/W:550/520MB/s
1 x Gigabyte 970A-DS3P, AM3+, AMD 970 SB950, 4x DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1866
1 x AMD FX-Series X6 6300 Processor 3.5GHz, 14MB, 95W, AM3+, FD6300WMHK
1 x ZALMAN CNPS 5X Performa, socket 775/1155/1156/AM2/AM2/AM3
1 x Fortron 500W Power Supply, Hyper, PPA5005003, 12cm fan

$987

Or go this route. You can still OC decently, it'll handle gaming just fine, and you're getting a solid new power supply included. 🙂 Down the road, just slap in a better mid-range GPU 😁 and you're set for years. 🙂
