Everything's fine during the day.... then I hit the sack.... (this bed is a total piece of sh*t).... and like clockwork, around 4 AM, my lower back starts killing me. It’s not even a spine thing or a general ache—it's specifically on the right side. I'm starting to think it's the damn bed because whenever I crash at my old man's place in Chicago and sleep through the night, I feel fine. But as soon as I get home, the pain hits. For example... I wake up in the morning.... it hurts.... I sit down in a chair... and if I lean my upper body to the right... no pain. But the second I lean left.... that right side just tightens up and screams at me. What the hell is that? Sciatica? Muscle strain? Liver... kidney... brain... fingernails... lungs. Someone who actually knows, tell me.... if you don't know, stop messing around. 🙂

It could be any of those things, honestly. Just go get a CBC and an abdominal ultrasound done so you can stop guessing and actually know what's going on.

So why does nothing, absolutely nothing, hurt during the day? Is this some kind of nighttime thing?🙂

It’s like—everything feels fine when I’m warmed up. But once I cool down overnight, everything just aches in the morning. I was thinking maybe it’s just a muscle strain? Because why does it hurt like hell when I lean left on the toilet in the morning? I can literally feel the tension! A buddy tells me I should go get a massage. Honestly, screw him and his ultrasound nonsense... I'm not dying. My blood work comes back perfect every two years anyway.

I’m assuming you’re dealing with some myofascial trigger points—basically little knots caught between your muscle fibers. It’s nothing life-threatening, but I know firsthand how much they can suck. You can usually work through it with regular massage, targeted stretching, and maybe an ultrasound treatment if it gets stubborn.

Here is what one doctor is saying.

Think of myogelosis as a localized thickening within the muscle tissue, often triggered by repetitive strain or intense muscle contractions. It’s usually pretty painful, especially when that buildup sits right on top of a bone—think about how much it would hurt if you had a knot pressing against your shoulder blade or your sacrum. Once that muscle shifts from its fluid, "sol" state into a more rigid, gel-like consistency, the change is permanent. You can't actually revert the tissue back to its original state, but you can definitely manage the fallout. Using specific physical therapies, like ultrasound treatment—which we call gelotripsy—can help break up that tension and take the edge off the pain.
Korsin is basically just applying heat directly to those specific muscle groups.

Dr. Porter Perić.
I am a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation and rheumatology.

Well, I tend to get this nagging muscle ache along my side if I sit in a bad position for too long—like right now, with my laptop perched precariously on my lap—but honestly, the pain disappears as long as I stay active, stretch out, and make sure I’m sitting and sleeping properly. I find that sleeping on my stomach works best for me (whereas my usual fetal position just absolutely wrecks my back). It might be the mattress... or perhaps even the pillow.

I used to deal with some liver issues back when it was enlarged, but everything seems to have settled down nicely again.

It could potentially be something related to the kidneys, though... but it definitely isn't my nails 😁. If you ask me, I'd put my money on a new mattress.

I mean, I bet Michelangelo is just coasting by now... and us renters aren't even people to them, we're just target practice... then they hit you with a "stay healthy"... yeah, right.
So, a buddy of mine was getting a massage, and the therapist goes, "Man, you are incredibly knotted up." He’s like, "Knotted how?" She was basically explaining what you wrote about those muscle lumps. He said he felt fine before the ice therapy, but apparently, massage therapists have a sixth sense for this stuff—they feel those knots under their hands and just try to smash them out.
Regarding warming up the muscles... I walk into a CVS and tell them, "Give me something that’ll make my muscles go absolutely ballistic from the heat." The clerk just laughs and hands it over. I head to the office, hit the restroom, and slather it on wherever it hurts. I walk back into my cubicle and wait... nothing. I’m thinking, "This cream is garbage." I hop in the car and start driving toward Miami... then the heat hits. It started burning against the seat. I had every window rolled down trying to cool off. You might as well have brewed me a coffee right there on the seat. My eyes were practically popping out of my head. I told myself, "Great, I'm stiff in the morning and now this cream is killing me." Honestly, I thought about going back to the pharmacy to ask for a cream to fight the cream.😬
Anyway... yeah... massage... damn, we're gonna try that for the first time soon. Have you guys tried it? Is it worth it?

I was thinking maybe it was my liver or my kidneys... but then I'm like... wait... why does it only happen in the morning when I first wake up??? What does an organ know about day versus night.... why doesn't it hurt at noon, for instance.... or in the afternoon.... why doesn't it hurt when I'm sleeping over at my old place...? I totally misread the kidney or liver thing.

Does an organ actually have some sort of internal clock that distinguishes between day and night? Why doesn't it ache at noon, for instance... or even in the late afternoon? And why doesn't it bother me when I'm staying over at my parents' house? If that's the case, then I must have completely misdiagnosed myself regarding those organs...

Or—and forgive me if I'm being a bit facetious here—could the pain be psychogenic in nature? It's a thought... maybe it hurts simply because you're missing your mom, or you just don't feel quite "held" or comforted. Yet, the moment you get back home, you sleep like a baby.🤣

Regardless of the cause, you should still take care of both your liver and your kidneys.😉
