Oh, absolutely—it's a massive difference.

👍

If Aero was working before, it really should be working now. Maybe check under Windows Update to see if there are any graphics drivers waiting in Optional Updates. It feels like this is probably just a driver issue. 👍

I picked up a new graphics card just a couple of months ago, and I already had Windows 7 installed on this rig

I went ahead and installed all the drivers that came with the card and everything seemed fine. I can always reinstall them since I've still got the CD lying around somewhere

Man, thanks for the tip. Reinstalled the graphics drivers and boom—Aero is back up and running perfectly. No more headaches

Got a bit of a situation here, but I'm mostly asking the actual computer wizards

So, I picked up this TV tuner card, right? Problem is, there isn't a single clue about the manufacturer anywhere on it.
The card just says this:

S800 VER 1.3 2005.1.12
MRH1S801BISC051110595

Can anyone actually make sense of these pathetic little scraps of info to figure out who made this thing or what its real name is?
Because honestly, I just need to find some drivers for Windows 7.

Is this mission impossible or what?
👍

DOES ANYONE HAVE A CLUE HOW TO FIGURE OUT WHO MADE THIS OR WHAT THE ACTUAL MODEL NAME IS?

Maybe it's this

though I'm kind of worried the card might be too old for Windows 7 😢

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing, honestly... but hey, why not? It was free, right? Might as well give it a shot.

I'll see if these drivers actually do anything for me tomorrow.

I am looking for some guidance on how to change the system font in Windows 7..
I have managed to adjust the font for certain elements, such as the icons and the Start menu, but I cannot seem to modify the rest of the interface. It remains stuck on the default setting.

I have come across various threads regarding Windows 7 suggesting that a complete font overhaul is possible, but I am unclear on the specific procedure. If anyone here happens to know the way, I would appreciate the assistance.. thanks 😉

You probably need a different thread for Windows stuff. Maybe try using ObjectDock or some other app to "beautify" your Windows setup.

I've got a question...
Over the last few days, my laptop has started restarting out of nowhere. Right before it shuts down, I get this long message on a blue screen. I can barely manage to read what it says before the whole thing cuts out—apparently, it’s doing a forced shutdown to prevent some kind of damage to Windows. I'm sure someone else has dealt with this before and knows exactly what I'm talking about. From what I can tell, it only happens when I have my torrent client running. I tried swapping out the software for a different one, but the same thing happens: the laptop dies shortly after I start a download.
I ran a scan with Norton, but it didn't find a single virus.
Is there any way to actually fix this, or am I looking at a full Windows reinstall?

That looks like a Blue Screen of death to me—which usually implies we're dealing with something a bit more serious... You'll probably need to jot down whatever specific error code pops up on the screen

I get that "a problem has been detected..." message, followed immediately by this:

It looks like the driver for a specific piece of hardware isn't behaving quite right. I was wondering, have you happened to plug in any new gear lately, or maybe tried uninstalling some existing drivers from the system?

Nothing much. When I first set up Windows, all the drivers were installed right then and there. This BSOD thing has only been happening for the last few days, and I can't recall installing anything new in the past two weeks—no new software or anything else. It only triggers a restart when I have a torrent client running. Otherwise, it's fine.

Check the Event Viewer to see if any errors are being logged.

You can find the Event Viewer here: system and security -> Administrative tools -> event Viewer -> Control panel -> system and security -> Administrative tools -> event Viewer. Once you get it open, expand "Windows logs" on the left and select "System." It might take a second to load everything since there’s usually a lot of data. Look specifically for anything labeled "ERROR"; you can pretty much ignore the "Information" entries, those are normal. Just let us know where those ERROR messages are popping up.

I finally dug deep enough to find this, and here’s what I’m seeing:
1. The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{F3CABE24-B906-4CBA-AC26-0C27E8738325} because another computer on the network has the same name. The server could not start.
2. I've spotted this one in several different places: under the source, it lists atikmdag, and the description says "Display is not active." The task category is listed as DAL. In some instances, it also shows CPLIB.
3. For this specific error, the description reads: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x100000d1 (0x8c13462b, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x88ee6555). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\Minidump\062510-15132-01.dmp. Report Id: 062510-15132-01.

There are plenty more, but I won't list them all unless it's actually necessary. Most of them fall under example 2.

Hmm... Which version of uTorrent are you running? If it’s an older build, maybe try a newer one. And just to be safe, run memtest86+ and let it go through at least two full passes to rule out any faulty RAM.

man i i have a real mess on my hands

so i grabbed this brand new 500GB hard drive
but during the OS install, i totally screwed up and only made one single partition (the C: drive)
where i put Windows 7
once everything was finally done, i realized i didn't bother making a D: drive at all
i tried formatting the whole drive just to start over from scratch, but it wouldn't let me format... instead, it just kept reinstalling Windows 7 right back onto that same C: drive
now i've basically got two versions of Windows sitting on C: and still no D: drive

I JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW THE HELL I CAN FORMAT THIS DRIVE TO WIPE EVERYTHING AND START FRESH. I TRIED USING THE INSTALL DVD BUT IT JUST KEEPS TRIGGERING THE REINSTALLATION PROCESS AGAIN

ANYONE GOT A CLUE?
JUST NEED THE STEPS OR SOME QUICK TIPS

really need this fixed fast
thanks

The version is 2.0.2.

I was reading up on MemTest online; do I need to burn it to a CD and boot from it when I start my laptop? That seems to be the only option I see when I open the file. And how long am I looking at for this thing to actually finish?

I don't get why I'm getting a Blue Screen of death only when the torrent client is active. If there's hardware failing somewhere, why doesn't the system crash when the torrent isn't running?

I wish I could tell you why this is happening, but I can't. It’s an odd issue. I know someone had something similar here once, but I don't recall if they actually fixed it. We just have to take it step by step and try to see if the components are okay first.

Regarding MemTest, you download it and burn it as an image. Then you boot the PC from that CD, just like you would to install Win. Leave it running for maybe 2-3 hours. After each pass, it should say "Pass completed without errors" or something. You shouldn't see any ERROR messages (red text).

One thing, though—before you run it, if you can, go into the BIOS and set the graphics memory allocation to the lowest possible setting. That might free up some RAM for the test.

Once the test is done, change everything back to how it was.

If MemTest passes, I guess you should try downloading fresh chipset and network card drivers from the manufacturer's website.
