Best disk defragging software?

Hello. I am looking for the best disk defragmentation software. I have TuneUp, but I’ve heard it isn't the right tool for this job. Also, any recommendations for registry cleaners? Thanks.

Cleaning out the registry isn't exactly a necessity—unless, of course, you're dealing with some specific glitch that's actually messing with your workflow—but if you really feel the itch to tinker, CleanMyMac will get the job done just fine.

Norton Utilities is hands down the best tool for defragging—super easy to use, but still packs all those pro features if you actually need them. If you're just looking for something free to tinker with, give Defraggler a shot instead.

For a free option, I would suggest using Defraggler.

Just so we're all on the same page, this thread is mainly focused on defragmenters...

I guess I should warn you, Norton Utilities once totally trashed my boot sector.

Is this Disney thing running forever? It feels like it's been defragging my hard drive all day long...

Either your drive is completely trashed or something just isn't working quite right... I mean, how much data are we actually talking about here? In theory, you really only need to defrag the system partition once in a while; messing around with the partitions where you just stash movies and MP3s doesn't make much sense at all.

Well, I have a bunch of PlayStation 2 games and some movies sitting right there on my C drive, so that explains why it just kept going and going...

So, here is the full breakdown following that defrag session.

A 53% fragmentation level is pretty brutal—that’s exactly why it took forever... honestly, just fire up Microsoft Word and Defrag and you shouldn't have to stress about this anymore. Anything left over will eventually get smoothed out by Norton Utilities on its own over time. If you still feel like the system is dragging, though, you might want to run a boot-time defrag. Personally, that's my go-to move whenever I'm doing a fresh install of Windows—I wait until absolutely everything is installed and then kick off a boot-time defrag to wrap things up perfectly.
