Greetings. Lately, I’ve been running into this recurring nuisance—whenever I hit the sleep button on my laptop, the screen goes dark, but the machine itself just keeps humming along in the background. The display refuses to wake up, leaving me staring at a black void. Consequently, I’m forced to perform a hard shutdown every single time by holding down the power button—an inefficient and frankly aggressive way to manage a computer. Does anyone have any insight into what might be causing this malfunction?

To start things off, maybe try a clean reinstall of your graphics card drivers first.

You can actually tweak the power scheme to decide exactly how long it takes for specific components to shut down or go into sleep mode...

I already did a reinstall, but I'm still running into the exact same issue.

Personally, I always configure my settings so the laptop never actually enters sleep mode—that’s just asking for trouble—instead, I just have the screen turn off after about 20 minutes, and that’s plenty. It's an HP Pavilion dv7.
