So, I recently started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and yesterday—about 30 minutes after we wrapped up—I noticed this weird pain in my ribcage. It’s right about 4 inches to the right, tucked between the 5th or 6th rib. A few times yesterday, it would sting whenever I tried to take a deep breath; nothing excruciating, but definitely noticeable, and it didn't even happen every single time I inhaled. Today, breathing feels totally fine, but if I press on that specific spot a little harder, I can still feel it.

I was wondering if anyone else here has dealt with something similar? What do you guys think this could be? Honestly, I’m on the fence about seeing a doctor because the pain isn't intense, and I don't want to miss training just to ask about it. But then again, I really don't want to have some 250lb guy accidentally land heavy on me the wrong way and sideline me for the next six months. On the flip side, I also don't want to skip class in two days if it's just a minor bruise or a pinched nerve. Compared to typical muscle soreness, this feels more like bone, so I wanted to see what kind of injuries people think are possible.

I'm hesitant to head to the doctor since the pain isn't severe, and I don't want to miss training just to ask about it. However, I really wouldn't want some 250lb+ guy to accidentally land on me the wrong way and sideline me for the next six months. On the flip side, I also don't want to skip my session in two days if it's just a minor bruise or a pinched nerve. Muscle soreness usually feels more painful than this, but since it feels like it's in the bone, I'd love to hear what kind of injuries we're looking at here.

If you want answers, go ahead and Google it, but if you want a serious medical opinion, you should probably go see a professional. No one here has telepathic powers to diagnose you—medicine is a science based on gathering data and drawing conclusions from those facts.
Anything else is just guesswork.

I’m just wondering if there's actually anything serious to worry about when the pain feels this mild and has even dialed back since yesterday. I don't mind hitting up the doctor if there’s a legitimate reason to be concerned, but if they’re just going to run a bunch of tests and send me off for imaging for something that happens all the time, then it feels like a total waste of 🤷time.
Google is throwing way too many possibilities at me—anything from gallbladder issues or a cracked rib to pinched nerves and muscle spasms—but none of it really gets into the specifics.

It could be a tendon strain or inflammation where the serratus anterior attaches to the rib cage.
That’s pretty much right where you pointed out.

My little contribution 😁

I have no clue what you might have done during BJJ, but I let my arms go limp at the top of a dumbbell fly... they flew out and I caught a nasty tear in my chest (don't ask 😁). It was killing me for a few days whenever I tried to stretch my arms out, but after some heavy pressure on the spot, it cleared up in about a week. Not sure if it's the same kind of injury you're dealing with, but there it is 🤷

Thanks, batler and master, but I think I might have actually tweaked something. I hit the gym for a workout today and man, it felt pretty rough. I’m heading to see my doctor tomorrow, but honestly, it looks like I'll probably have to take about 2-3 weeks off from training 😢
