Right now, I've got a single 4GB stick of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 sitting in my rig. I was wondering if I could toss a G.Skill Trident Z 4GB stick in there to run in dual channel mode since my motherboard supports it? Or would it be better to just grab a 1x8GB stick instead? Thanks in advance!

In theory, sure... But even if someone had a situation identical to yours, they'd need to be running the exact same motherboard to be absolutely certain about anything...

Those kinds of setups usually work fine, though I’ve definitely had my fair share of weirdly mixed batches of cookies that didn't cause any issues at all. Still, I guess you can never be 100% sure until you actually give it a shot. It's impossible to know for certain ahead of time because there's always that small chance the ingredients just won't want to cooperate.

Hi there,

I have an older desktop at home that I mostly use for browsing the web, but it’s currently stuck with just 1GB of RAM. Since I occasionally try to run some older games on it, I decided to pick up some extra memory to give it a little boost.

Looking at my motherboard, it specifies dual channel support for Crucial DDR2 667, and I see two yellow slots and two orange ones. Right now, the system is running a single 1G Crucial DDR2 667 stick, so I went ahead and bought a matching 1G SanDisk DDR2 667 stick from Amazon to pop into a slot of the same color.

The thing is—and this is where I'm getting stuck—I've tried every possible combination of slots you can imagine, but it just won't cooperate. If I install both sticks at once, the system only recognizes 1GB of total RAM and nothing more. The computer runs perfectly fine if I use just one stick or the other—so they aren't broken—but together, they just refuse to work.

I was reading online that when it comes to RAM, having sticks from the exact same manufacturer is pretty vital—some people even say you shouldn't mix old and new modules because it can tank your performance.

Could this be related to how the dual channel architecture works? Is there something specific I should be looking out for beyond just matching the colored slots? 🤔

Thanks, 😁

You just have to watch out for the color matching. You could try resetting your BIOS settings, but I doubt that’ll actually do anything. It’s probably just that your RAM sticks aren't playing nice together, which isn't super common, but I guess it happens sometimes.

Maybe just sell the SanDisk or try trading them for something else.

You really ought to consult your motherboard manual to see exactly how to seat those sticks for dual-channel mode, since the color-coded slots don't mean the same thing on every board. That said, isn't it highly probable that your headache is stemming from the fact that these modules just aren't playing nice together because they come from different manufacturers? In the real world, why would anyone bother mixing different brands of RAM when you can just avoid the headache entirely?

I’ve honestly tried every single possible combination—swapping settings, tweaking everything I could think of—and nothing works; it just keeps spinning in circles. Thanks for all the advice in the comments, though—it’s been incredibly helpful. I think my next move is to just track down the exact same frame and see if that fixes the headache once and for all. 👍
