Is this build compatible? + Questions

So, I'm putting together a new rig. It’s been quite a while since I last sat down to build a machine, and after a fair amount of deliberation, I’ve landed on this configuration:

Processor: Intel Core i7-6800K (3.4GHz, 15MB, LGA2011-V3) box

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212, compatible with 2011/2011-3/1150/1151/1155/1156

Motherboard: ASUS ROG Extreme, Intel X99, DDR4, audio, G-LAN, S-ATA, RAID, PCI-E 3.0, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, ATX, socket 2011

RAM: Patriot Viper4 Memory, 2400Mhz, 16GB (2x8GB), CL15

HDD: 1TB Toshiba SATA III 3.5'' Hard Drive, 1000 GB, SATA3, 32 MB, 7,200 rpm DT01ACA100

Power Supply: Fortron Hyper 700W

Graphics Card: EVGA GTX 1070 FTW, 8GB GDDR5, DX12

Case: Zalman Z9 NEO BLACK mid tower case black

Optical Drive: LG GH24NSC0, 24x, SATA, black, bulk

My intention is to use this setup for gaming, streaming, video editing, and music production. I’ve specifically targeted this CPU because my library consists mostly of CPU-heavy titles—think ArmA 3, Total War, or Skyrim—along with heavily modded versions of GTA and similar heavy hitters. Please feel free to suggest any alternatives if you spot a better path. This is my first time actually assembling a PC from scratch; I’ve done plenty of research, but I’d appreciate some extra eyes. I have a cousin who works in IT, though we haven't spoken in a while, so I figured I'd turn to this community instead.

Does everything look solid to you? Also, if you have a moment, I could use some clarity on a few specific points:

1. Will I need to pick up some thermal paste for this assembly?
2. Since I'm working with a Broadwell-E generation processor, will I need to flash the BIOS on the motherboard, and if so, what does that process entail?
3. Is this power supply sufficient to handle these components?

More people are suggesting a dual PC setup for streaming. Honestly, trying to game and stream on a single rig at the same time causes a ton of headaches. You'll see plenty of threads about this online, and most folks really swear by using two separate PCs. If you're hell-bent on doing everything on one machine, you're going to need a seriously powerful processor to pull it off.

But then again, what wouldn't qualify as a "good" processor by those standards?

It’s a solid CPU, but I’m a little worried about how much streaming it can actually handle. There's a massive difference between pushing an AMD FX-8350 or an Intel Core i5-4440 to its limit versus trying to run a 6-core chip where you're just leaning on two cores and hyperthreading. You should really think long and hard about whether you want a single-PC setup or a dual-PC setup, especially since streaming is the goal here. If we're talking about anything else, this processor is a beast. But seriously—streaming on a single CPU can be a real struggle. Do some digging on Google; there are tons of threads about this exact issue.

I'm actually in a similar line of work (doing YouTube gameplay)... I have a few streamer buddies I can hit up for some advice, so there's no harm in asking. 🙂

The 275GB Crucial MX300, SATA3, CT275MX300SSD1.
It’s an MSI B150M Bazooka Plus, LGA 1151 socket.
It’s an Intel Core i5-6402P (6MB Cache, up to 3.40 GHz) on the LGA 1151 socket, I guess.
The Zalman Z1 NEO mid tower case.
The XFX RX 480 8GB GTR (RX-480P8DFA6) features 8 GB of DDR5 memory with a 256-bit bus, running at 1288/8000 MHz. I guess it's a decent little card.
It’s an FSP Fortron/Source Hyper 500W unit, ATX 2.31 spec—specifically the HP500, model PPA5005003. I guess it's just one of those standard power supplies.
WD Blue 1TB HDD, 3.5", 7200RPM, 64MB Cache, SATA3, WD10EZEX
I guess this is just a single 8GB stick of DDR4 Crucial RAM, clocked at 2133MHz with CL15 latency. It's the CT8G4DFS8213 model.

Here's what I was talking about. My buddy's running an i7 laptop with 12GB of RAM and a 960, yet he’s out here streaming games like Pokémon FireRed... I’m still sticking to my guns: if you want to stream, you either need a beast of a PC or two separate rigs.

Anyway, just dropping a link to the forum from my old partnership network so you can check out some of the experiences there.

You can't compare an i7 and a GTX 960 mobile setup to actual desktop equivalents. There's a massive gap there.

But let’s be real—streaming a VBA emulator game isn't exactly the same thing as streaming a desktop game at 1080p 60fps. VBA is pretty low-demand...

The software being used, the upload speed—that’s what actually dictates how the stream performs.

I've actually seen firsthand how streams behave for people running an Intel Core i7-4770 and an R9 280X on titles like F1 from Codemasters. There are tons of examples out there. For one of those F1 games, the Intel Core i7-4770 and the 280X just weren't enough, regardless of the connection speed.

Well, I actually ended up purchasing mine directly from them, so while the configuration is somewhat different than what was suggested, I suppose I should still say thank you for the recommendation.

Perhaps he’s looking at a used workstation from about a year ago, maybe one running dual Xeon processors. Something server-grade. It’s likely possible to track down a setup like that if it fits his needs, though I don't have much direct experience there—it's just a hunch. I haven't even considered the price point, but I suspect such a machine would cost less than this new build he put together.

Something along these lines. It would be fairly simple to drop in a dedicated card, perhaps an RTX 3070, and eventually upgrade to a beefier power supply. I suspect this could serve as a viable solution for both streaming and gaming purposes.
