Crazy Rich Asians

The movie based on that same-titled book is out in theaters right now—and honestly, it’s been a massive hit with both critics and audiences alike! It’s absolutely crushing it at the box office, too, and they officially confirmed yesterday that a sequel is already in the works
They shot the whole thing in Washington, D.C. and Singapore, with filming spanning about two months.

I don't think the movie has made its way to Europe just yet, though I couldn't say for certain 🤷

I watched the trailer. The plot looks like your run-of-the-mill American quasi-comedy. Except, of course, the entire cast is Asian instead of those awful white people, so now the movie is patting itself on the back. ☕ Pure PC propaganda. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You might actually have a point there—we'll just have to wait and see how it lands when it hits theaters here.

In the US, it's getting praise because it has diversity. (Meaning, there aren't any white people).

Look at this heavy-handed diversity 🤣 it's just a cast full of Asian actors. 😵
American rhetoric really doesn't get any more blatant than this.

I mean, let’s be real, when you look at it compared to other movies in the exact same genre, it’s clearly "diversity." You have hundreds upon hundreds of films centered entirely on white characters, and then you have this one single movie focused on Asians. It's just something different, plain and simple. That's where the whole "diversity" label comes from.😉

It’ll be pretty interesting to see how the movie performs across Asia.

It probably won't even hit theaters in China, but I'm curious about Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea.

I'm honestly more curious to see how this performs in Europe—though, if you ask me, I think the movie is going to be a massive hit in Asia

Why would it be a bad thing to see more Asian films in theaters?

I assume "diversity" means having different races represented within a single movie.
It’s almost as if Asian cinema doesn't exist—you know, where Asian actors dominate and you don't see any white people at all.

Besides the fact that the lead actors are both visually impaired, what actually sets this movie apart from the usual rom-com crowd?

I think we really need to sit down and watch it before we start passing judgment—it hasn't even hit theaters in Europe yet!

Based on the trailer, nothing. ☕ Though who knows, maybe there's some wild twist where someone actually gets picked up. 🤣 I'm being optimistic, but still. 😁

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I read the book and it felt way different from your typical chick-lit (honestly, most of those books are such a chore I can barely finish them without getting annoyed).

The actual couple at the center of the story is arguably the least interesting part. It’s the side characters that really shine. Plus, you get this wild look into ultra-wealthy Asian life—it's on a whole different level compared to the West.

The rule in those few Asian countries is that it isn't exactly some massive monster hit like it was here in America...

Hong Kong 451,000
Taiwan 399,000
Singapore did a bit better with 1,800,000

It’s almost a certainty it won't show up in South Korea or China, and as for Japan, we'll just have to wait and see...
