Friday the 13th (2011)

I just finished watching the remake of Friday the 13th.
Since I haven't seen the original yet, I don't really have anything to compare it to, aside from the review over at Half in the Bag—though I’m intentionally holding off on watching that one for now.

The plot kicks into gear unexpectedly fast. It lacks a bit of tension and atmosphere, but overall, the movie was a pleasant surprise. My only real gripe is that it felt too short.

Sure, the film is riddled with plot holes and logic gaps, but honestly, that’s the last thing you want in a horror flick. In any case, it's an entertaining watch that I'd recommend to anyone.

Just a little fun fact for you guys: that vampire character played by Colin Farrell eats apples or drinks beer, yet he can’t enter a house without an invitation and the sun is basically his mortal enemy. He hits almost every classic stereotype. It’s pretty much the same deal with Let me in regarding the sunlight and needing an invite, except there he can't touch human food at all. 🤷

On a side note, just a little fun fact: the vampire character played by Colin Farrell can eat apples or drink beer, yet he still can't enter a house uninvited and the sun is a huge problem—basically hits all the usual tropes. But then you look at let me in, where the sun and uninvited entry rules are the same, except he can't actually eat human food. 🤷

Just finished it and I have to say, it's a really solid remake—honestly, maybe even a tiny bit better in certain spots. I liked how they modernized things for today's audience. Sure, there are some plot holes, but nothing more than what you'd find in the original.

Tennant was fantastic as Peter Vincent. 😁

Yeah, pretty solid remake. It actually surprised me; I was expecting it to be way worse.
The only thing they could've fixed was those vampires. They make some weird faces sometimes, like someone shoved a toothpick up their nose too fast.😁

Honestly, it was a pretty fun vampire flick, probably way better than I was expecting to get out of it.
Colin Farrell is absolutely killing it as the vampire 🙏 The plot is pretty standard stuff—you've definitely seen it all before—but honestly, that didn't bother me one bit while I was watching. For me, the biggest thing is the vibe, and the atmosphere here is totally spot on.
Overall though, we're talking about a middle-of-the-road horror movie, so if you go in with sky-high expectations, you're probably gonna be disappointed.

My rating: 5/10

Hey, how does the original Evil compare? Is it better, in your opinion?

I thought the vampires were alright, and man, CF is such a standout as the vampire—he acts like he's just too powerful for any mere mortal to touch, kind of like a Predator, which explains that smug look on his face, at least that's how it came across to me.

If I remember correctly, Marcy from Marriage Water is in the original cast here.😂

There are definitely some attractive women in this movie, and did anyone else catch Sofia Vergara's sister?

I haven't actually seen the original, but this was absolute garbage. What really floored me were all those missed opportunities to build any real tension, almost like they were filming some half-hour TV episode where you just have to rush straight into the action... everything feels rushed, just "get to the gore already" with zero suspense. Another massive turn-off was the catastrophically bad acting, especially from Colin Farrell. He deserves a golden raspberry for this one. Either he’s become way too full of himself thinking he can coast through any movie without trying, or he just showed up, took the paycheck, and ran...
If this were some low-budget trash flick in the vein of Megashark or Turboalligator, I wouldn't care; I would've watched it with genuine enjoyment just to waste some time, but because this was shot as an a-production, every single lack of quality and failure to meet basic standards is completely unforgivable.

Honestly, this was surprisingly fun. Sure, there are some logic gaps and total nonsense moments that really start piling up toward the end, but when you look at the atmosphere and the pacing, it actually holds its own. It’s way better than the original—that messy blend of teen comedy and campy horror just doesn't work unless you're feeling super nostalgic for those old 80s flicks. Still, a solid movie for what it is...

Fright Night (2011)

Since we're talking about a remake of that legendary original from '85, I can't say I'm totally pissed off—mostly just because someone actually had the guts to revisit such a specific flick. I watched the original back when I was just some kid, and man, I remember it hitting me like a freight train. Back then, I was basically a total amateur when it came to romance and stuff, kind of a lost cause, just like the kid in the movie.
And yeah, fine, I’ll admit it: during that whole awkward growth spurt phase, I was a massive, jealous wreck, ready to go absolutely nuclear just to defend some girl's honor.
That damn vampire seducer in the old version? He was basically the walking embodiment of those older, experienced macho guys I used to look up to with this weird, masochistic kind of fear. In my dumb teenage brain, I honestly thought those guys could swoop in and steal my girl just for the hell of it. God, I was terrified. 🤦
I gotta say, there were moments where Colin Farrell really brought back those ghosts from my past—those ruthless, smooth-talking playboys.

I mean, you guys probably caught that parallel/metaphor thing going on, right?
So, yeah,
looking back at it now,
it all seems like these ridiculous, pointless fears.

Anyway, enough about my puberty meltdown, let's get back to the actual movie.
For the most part, they actually managed to nail that weird mix of comedy, vampirism, and sexuality that made the original so special. Colin Farrell is an absolute killer choice for the badass role; he’s got that dangerous charmer vibe baked into his DNA and he plays it perfectly on screen. As for the CGI? Man, they went way overboard, totally drowned in it, but hey, at least it’s creative. Still, in terms of pure atmosphere and tension, it doesn't even come close to being a peer to the original. The mom and the girl are both great picks too—super sexy and solid acting, both of them.



The vampire hunter turned out to be a complete joke; in the original, his presence actually gave the movie some weight.

7/10 Not a bad watch, though why wouldn't you? It's not like you have much better options lying around...

It’s a solid movie; I think you guys hit the nail on the head already. Someone mentioned how they managed to use vampire tropes without making them feel dated, and I agree.
The atmosphere works well, too. Plus, there are some genuinely funny moments sprinkled in.
In my opinion, Farrell was perfect as the macho vampire. That’s his lane, and honestly, what else would you expect him to do?

My one gripe is the lead kid. His calmness and confidence in high-stakes situations felt a bit forced and unrealistic. He also looks like he hasn't shaved in years.

But since this is a remake, maybe they were trying to stay close to the original. I haven't seen that version, so I can't say for sure.

So, they say apples are actually good for your teeth, right? And then you have this guy drinking beer, which probably just means he’s trying to get hammered. Honestly, that feels like the only logical way to look at it... otherwise, the whole movie just doesn't make any sense at all!

It’s not just that they don't need it; in Let Me In, the little vampire girl actually gets sick from eating gum or candy—I can't quite remember which one right now. 🤷

I haven't checked out the remake yet, but honestly, the 1985 original is just top-tier 🙏
If you’re a teenager looking for those classic '80s horror vibes, I’d say this one is a total must-watch.
The plot is killer. I absolutely love this movie, though after catching a glimpse of the remake's trailer, I decided to skip it... I just don't want anything messing with my memory of the original version. But hey, if you haven't seen the original, go for it. They really nailed the vampire aesthetic back then.
