Hi there,

I was hoping someone with more experience could break down the difference between standard over-the-counter pills (like Andol or Caffetin, for instance) and those plant-based supplements? What are the real pros and cons here? I generally try to avoid taking pills whenever possible—but my doctor recently prescribed some plant-based Blueberry tablets twice a day to help with my vision, and I’d love to dig a little deeper into how these types of supplements work. Any insights or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Best,🙂

From what I’ve read online, this supplement is used for things like AMD or glaucoma. Plus, you literally said they are for eye health, so I have no idea why you're even comparing them to Andol or Caffetin?
Go ask an ophthalmologist. They'll actually have the answers you're looking for.

Thanks for the quick reply, vividsailor7!

My mistake on the wording—I said tablets instead of supplements. It seems everything in pill form just registers as a "tablet" to me lately.😵

What I’m actually trying to figure out is whether these supplements carry any side effects (aside from the obvious benefits)? In my case, I'm currently taking New Nordic products.

Personally, I’m pretty skeptical about this stuff. Sure, some studies point to certain things being effective—like probiotics, Iberogast, or cranberry for urinary tract issues—but most of them aren't harmful. That said, some can definitely interact poorly with specific medications. For instance, I see some of my colleagues prescribing Ginkgo by the handful, which concerns me. Honestly, though, I can't say for certain because this isn't my specialty; I'm an ophthalmologist.
2. Besides, I don't deal with these kinds of supplements very often.
Still, I'm not ruling out the possibility that they might actually help you.
