I’m pretty sure I saw someone post a specific command on here once that would let you fix this whole mess right through the start > Run dialog... does anyone remember where that was?

Hmm, an error popped up and then everything just disappeared before I could see what happened. 😁

I assume it was

And I was wondering, is there some kind of alternative available? I really need one so I can coordinate our gaming sessions!

😁 I’m looking for something that can handle both, or maybe even more than that.
I think I read somewhere that there’s a single program out there that supports MSN, AOL Instant Messenger, and Yahoo all at once... but I just can't seem to track it down anywhere.

there are two main options
www.trillian.cc
www.miranda-im.org

Trillian is definitely the flashier choice, which might be a drag if you aren't into constant tweaking. Miranda has its own perks—it’s lightweight and doesn't even require an installation—but those are just minor details.

By the way, you can kill off Messenger and turn off autoplay by typing gpedit.msc into start > Run.

Miranda supports pretty much everything under the sun. Not to mention it’s loaded with a massive pile of plugins.

It’s definitely worth it. You should be running AOL Instant Messenger instead of supporting something as lame as MSN.

For the past two years, I’ve always made sure to disable MSN right after installing it. However, since I started playing Age of Empires II online about a month ago, I’ve actually had to leave it running so I can connect with my group through the messenger, which isn't something I'm particularly thrilled about.

I’d definitely suggest giving it a shot. Honestly, we should be sticking to the AOL Instant Messenger network instead of settling for something as basic as MSN.

So, if you were me, which specific plugins would you actually recommend installing?

Come on, let's be real—Miranda doesn't support proxy connections, which is a total dealbreaker.

Here is how you can handle it:
On Windows XP Pro, go to start > Run, type in gpedit.msc and hit OK. From there, just follow this path: Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows components > Windows Messenger. Look for the setting "Do not allow Windows messenger to run," set it to Enabled, and click OK. Once you close the Group Policy Editor, you should be all set. Goodbye, MSN.

Why not just go into the General options on MSN Messenger and uncheck that first box that says "Autoamiticly start messenger..."?
That way you haven't removed it entirely, so you can still launch it whenever you actually feel like chatting with people, but you won't be stuck showing up as online every single time you log on.
