Hey everyone,

So, I was trying to plug in an old hard drive just to run some tests on it, but my recovery software is throwing a fit—it’s telling me I need to switch my BIOS setting to IDE mode because it can't function while I'm on AHCI mode.
The problem is, once I jump into the BIOS and toggle it over to IDE, the system starts loading macOS, then just hits a loop where it restarts right before the OS fully boots—it just keeps looping endlessly.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this kind of conflict?

Thanks,

The only way you're going to pull this off is if you jump into the BIOS first, switch the setting to IDE, wipe the drive, and then do a fresh install of macOS. Though, honestly, I'm not sure if it's even worth all that hassle if you're just using that hard drive for testing purposes anyway.

No, no—I’ve been digging into the ISO files and finally wrapped my head around it, but honestly? It just doesn't seem worth the hassle at this point...

Now I'm just brainstorming a better way to handle things down the road—something like being able to bridge an HDD from a second computer to my main rig, just so I can run those drive tests more easily.😕

For now, I've loaded a hard drive regenerator boot CD onto the machine and started the diagnostic process.

It really ought to be running in IEEE mode—unless you're somehow rocking some ancient, prehistoric version from the Stone Age.

Hmm, I'm currently on version 1.71... would you consider that outdated?

Why is it such a pain to find this on Google? 🤦

Look, you're running the 2011 trial version here—give that one a shot instead.

Look, searching Google isn't the difficult part—it's just that we're specifically using version 1.71 because we managed to track down the portable edition... since we work at a firm and all, you know how things go.😉

Pretty much, yeah. It's been about four years.

Alright, thanks for the help 🙂

For now, at least, I can get the HDD Regenerator boot CD running. Once I actually need to run some tests from my own PC, then I'll really have to sit down and figure out my next move.🙂
