LGA 1156 socket questions

Hey everyone, I could really use some help here. I'm currently stuck on an LGA 1156 setup with a Core i5-750, but I've been having some stability issues with my motherboard lately. It feels like it's on its last legs... does anyone know if these boards are even still being produced or where I might be able to track one down? (I heard a rumor that ASRock might actually release a new board for this socket in the next few months, but who knows???) Also, if I move away from the 1156 socket entirely, what should I look at from the AMD side? From what I've seen, the Core i5-750 seems to outperform the AMD FX-6300—even though the FX runs about 800MHz faster—in basically everything except maybe video editing, which isn't great on the FX-6300 anyway. Bottom line: I need a solid gaming CPU that won't require me to sell a kidney just to afford it, which seems to be the standard when dealing with Intel... I've been building PCs for nearly ten years now, but I'm genuinely stuck this time. I'm losing my mind trying to hunt down decent motherboards that clearly don't exist anymore 🤦. Any advice would be appreciated

I guess your best bet is just hunting down a used motherboard if you're trying to save some cash. Finding anything new is going to be a struggle, and even if you do track one down, it'll probably cost an arm and a leg.

So how exactly is the motherboard telling you it's about to kick the bucket? What's actually going wrong?

Only two out of the four RAM slots are even functional, half my USB ports are dead, and sometimes I have to try turning the PC on ten times—even pulling the CMOS battery just to get a signal—before it finally boots. Honestly, I've had nothing but "wonderful" experiences with this motherboard lately.

To be honest, I’m seriously considering making the jump over to AMD. My big question is: what should I pick up from the AMD lineup that would actually outperform my Core i5-750 while remaining stable? (And by stable, I mean I want an AMD processor that won't act up). Also, does DirectX 12 really help boost performance for AMD chips with six or more cores, or is that just marketing hype? I've heard rumors that it finally allows you to utilize all those cores properly, whereas before they were capped at four or something like that... It's a bit frustrating because I can't find any LGA 1156 motherboards anywhere anymore, whether used or new. It's a shame.

LGA 1156 boards were pricey even back when they were current. You won't find new ones in any major US retailers, and even overseas, you aren't finding anything reasonable for under $150-$200.

Since you're planning to overclock, here's what I'd suggest on the AMD side:

DirectX 12 reduces CPU overhead regardless of whether you're running Intel or AMD. Just go online and look up which APIs you're actually using.

The EVO 212 is a beast on an AMD FX-83xx build. Honestly, if you want anything better than that, you’re looking at water cooling...

To isn't exactly a steal anymore. It’s pushing close to $100, and honestly, you could grab a Mugen Max for just a little more. Plus, if you look at the $160-$60 range, the LC-CC-120 is right there and holds its own perfectly. Of course, if you already own it, then you're all set!
