Macular tear: anyone dealt with this?

My wife (56) just got diagnosed with a macular tear, and they're pushing for surgery. I've been falling down internet rabbit holes reading about this, and honestly, the whole idea just creeps me out... it’s nerve-wracking. Has anyone here actually dealt with a vitrectomy? Like, personal experience or maybe a family member went through it?
She can still see "okay," for the most part... except straight lines look wavy or shifted in one eye. No other symptoms yet.

Vitrectomy is actually pretty routine. There’s really nothing to be afraid of—honestly, from what I’ve seen, it isn't scary at all. They just make a tiny incision and then you spend a few days recovering at the hospital.

I wouldn't say that,
they go right into the center of your vision, "scraping" the eye, pumping in oil or gas, whatever. There are endless possible complications and nobody tells you a damn thing—it's just "cut it out" and you're done.
But once the eye is gone, it's gone.
