Medieval horror and thriller recommendations?

Hey there!

Does anyone know of any supernatural thrillers or horror movies set in the Middle Ages?

Here are a few I know:

Army of Darkness isn't exactly a masterpiece.😁)
Black Death is coming.
Season of the Witch is coming.

He's got that one... what's it called, "The Name of the Rose," if I remember correctly, starring Sean Connery and Slater.

Blood Rain (2005)
I recently revisited *The Name of the Rose* (1986). It remains a deeply compelling piece of cinema.

Thirteenth Warrior could probably find a spot here too....

Then you should probably just go ahead and place the Blood Rain and flesh right there.

I haven't seen that one. Is it that mercenary movie starring Rutger Hauer? Not sure what kind of horror elements are actually in there.

Look, Thirteenth Warrior definitely has its share of supernatural vibes: you've got cannibals who might be descendants of Neanderthals, that old woman who's supposedly over a hundred years old, and the idea that Wendole can only be stopped if we kill their "Mother" and "Leader." Then there's the fog and all that. All in all, it's a good movie—I actually think it's great—even if it doesn't have much basis in actual history.😉

I remember watching this show about a priest detective when I was just a kid. Total tangent, I know, but does anyone remember what it was called?

Maybe you mean Cadfael. I used to love watching that when I was little. He was a monk, too.

Unless you're thinking of Father Brown, though that doesn't really fit the whole medieval vibe.

As for the main topic... hmm, maybe Hamlet? You've got ghosts, betrayals, murders, all kinds of scheming. It's basically a classic medieval thriller, I guess. 😁

Man, that’s like a total VHS era flick, right?
Do they actually brick someone alive in that one?

I remember it being a really solid movie—definitely gotta track it down again...

I haven't seen it yet, but it looks promising... a group of Scandinavian crusaders, including a blind but ruthless pagan, gets lost on their way to the Holy Land and ends up in some other mysterious, foggy territory..... definitely worth a watch 😁

It's just not really a thriller or a horror movie. It's more like some meditative art film. 😉>

Well, if we're talking about the Middle Ages—I'd definitely go with Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal.

Throughout the film, amberwalker4 is essentially playing chess with death itself—it's quite intense. While those specific elements aren't exactly the main focus, they're certainly there under the surface. My professor might call it "intellectual horror," if you can believe that.

I kind of doubt that when rustyscout34 started this thread about horror, they meant that specific intellectual kind. But whatever. 🙂
