I am currently running an iPhone 15 Pro motherboard paired with 2 x 2GB sticks of DDR3 memory, which has unfortunately become quite insufficient for my needs.
Given this situation, what would be the most prudent course of action? Should I purchase a set of 2 x 4GB modules and replace my current ones, or would it be wiser to invest in a single 8GB module on its own?
Furthermore, is it possible to combine a single 8GB stick with one of my existing 2GB sticks? I find the mechanics of this somewhat unclear, as I have heard conflicting reports suggesting that mixing different capacities is not advisable. Since my motherboard features four RAM slots, would it actually be feasible to add an 8GB module alongside my current 2 x 2GB configuration?
The least ideal scenario for me would be purchasing 2 x 4GB modules, as I cannot predict when I might need to upgrade that additional 8GB capacity later. Perhaps the best strategy would be to buy 8GB now, and then perhaps another 8GB in a year or two?
My primary concern is whether it is at all possible to pair a single 8GB stick with my existing hardware, or if an 8GB stick can function effectively on its own without being part of a dual-channel setup?
Additionally, which brand of memory would you recommend—perhaps Kingston, or is there another manufacturer you prefer?
Should I be looking at DDR3, or is it time to move to DDR4?
