Hi everyone, thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I'm building a spreadsheet for work and I want to set it up so that if I type the number 1 into a cell, another cell automatically displays $3.25.

If I change that same cell to a 2, I want it to show a different value, like $3.75, and

if I enter a 3, it should display $4.00.

I would be incredibly grateful if anyone could point me toward the right tool or method to make this happen.

So, I'm putting together this spreadsheet for work, and what I really need is for the sheet to react automatically. If I type a "1" into a specific cell, I want another cell to show $3.25,

But then, if I change that same cell to a "2", I want it to display a different amount, like $3.75, and

if I put in a "3", it should show something like $4.00.

If anyone knows the best way to handle this, I would be soooooo incredibly grateful..

Does that second cell always just increase by 9? Or were those numbers you used just random examples?
If it’s the first case—where there's a consistent mathematical pattern—then you can just pop this formula into that second cell:
Code:
=A1+9

Just make sure A1 is actually the address of your input cell (obviously, if yours is located somewhere else, use that address instead).

Now, if it isn't a simple matter of adding 9, and you have a bunch of different specific values you're trying to trigger, you could use nested IF functions. But let's be real—if you have a massive list of possibilities (I'm talking hundreds), nesting IF statements becomes a total nightmare. In my experience, when things get complicated like that, it's much cleaner to just use a Macro. Personally, I find Macros to be the easiest way to handle anything remotely complex. 🙂

For instance, try putting this formula into cell B1:=IF(A1=1;10;IF(A1=2;11;IF(A1=3;12;""))).
Basically, if you type 1 into A1, then B1 (or wherever you've placed it) will spit out 10. If you put a 2 in A1, B1 shows 11, and finally, if you enter a 3 in A1, B1 displays 12.

Hey there!

I’ve run into a bit of a snag in Excel. Basically, whenever I write a formula in a cell and the result turns out to be 0 (zero), the value just... vanishes. It won't display anything at all. I feel like I’ve poked around in the cell Formatting settings enough to cover every base, but nothing seems to stick. Any advice on how to fix this?

Thanks.

Did you perhaps go into the Tools, Options, View menu and toggle something off? It’s one of those things that just vanishes without warning, and honestly, it drives me up the wall. I spent half an hour yesterday digging through my settings because a single button disappeared—just gone, like it never existed. You think you know how your software works, then suddenly everything is out of alignment. Check there first. So, I was sitting there this morning, staring at my screen, just trying to make sense of these spreadsheets, when it hit me—the absolute nightmare of dealing with zero values. You know the feeling? You’re working through a massive data set, everything seems fine, and then suddenly, you’re staring at a sea of nothingness. Just zeros everywhere. It’s maddening. It ruins the whole flow of the analysis. You try to calculate an average or run some sort of projection, and those pesky little zeros start dragging everything down, skewing the results until they’re completely useless. It’s like trying to measure the height of a building while someone keeps putting pebbles in your measuring tape. It just doesn't work. I spent nearly two hours yesterday wrestling with this in Excel, trying to find a way to either hide them or bypass them without breaking the entire formula. My coffee went cold, my back started aching—the usual routine—and I still felt like I was fighting a losing battle against a bunch of digital ghosts. Honestly, sometimes I think these programs are designed specifically to test our sanity. Does anyone else feel like they spend more time fixing formatting issues than actually doing any real work? It's exhausting.

Did you perhaps toggle something off under the Tools, Options, View menu? Dealing with zero values can be a real headache when you're trying to make sense of a dataset. It’s one of those things that seems straightforward on the surface, but once you start digging into the math, you realize how much they can skew your entire perspective. It's like trying to calculate the average speed of a car trip when the GPS keeps registering stops where no one actually parked; the data says you're stationary, but the reality is just a gap in information. Whether you're working in Excel or just staring at a spreadsheet, a zero isn't always a "nothing." Sometimes it's a valid data point, and sometimes it's just noise masquerading as substance. You have to decide whether to treat them as true nulls or if they represent an actual measurement of nothingness. If you handle them blindly, your averages become useless, and your trends lose all credibility. It requires a bit of tactical thinking—deciding when to filter them out and when to let them stand.

That’s all there is to it. Much appreciated.

I'm running Windows 7 and I can't figure out how to turn off these formatting marks for spaces and whatnot. Where am I supposed to go to disable them?

Just head over to Formatting marks and uncheck whatever you don't want cluttering up your screen! Personally, I keep all of them turned on because they're a total lifesaver when you're fine-tuning a document, but most people prefer to keep them hidden.

That’s got nothing to do with your OS.
In Word, just hit the button (icon)

It really all depends on what his default settings look like! For me, that icon wasn't even on my toolbar by default.

I wasn't even talking about how to find the Show/Hide button. It's pretty obvious you just gotta hit Customize to add it if it isn't already there. Word 2003 I'm sorry, it looks like your message was cut off. What's on your mind? 2007 Different approach entirely (didn't even say which program—Word or whatever else—he's actually using).

Just trying to let him know—it’s got nothing to do with the OS here, specifically Windows 7.
Hey.

Hey there!

Yeah, you're totally right about that. This issue is strictly happening within Word.

Thanks, everyone. I turned it off. The icon was right there on the toolbar the whole time; I honestly have no clue why I missed it. 🤷 I learned how to use Word on Windows XP.

Hey there. Just got a quick question about Word. (Regarding this inquiry...So, when you’re messing around with Text Wrapping set to "Tight," but the image doesn't have an alpha channel... does the text actually hug the object itself, or does it just stick to the edges of the rectangular bounding box? I'm trying to figure out if I should actually file a formal complaint about this. Thanks!

looks to me like they used some kind of specific style or shape when they set up the wrapping

How do I get rid of this weird text highlighting in Word?
Can someone help me out here??
I've got this annoying gray background stuck over my text and I can't shake it.

I keep getting this gray color covering up my text.

If you're talking about a text highlight, there's an actual icon right on the toolbar for that! Just select the text you want to fix, click that icon where you pick your highlight colors, and then just choose 'No Color.' That should clear it right up!

Honestly, both answers are right if I’m following the question correctly.
If it's a JPG, the text wraps around the image frame in Word.
But if you use a PNG with transparency (like a clear background), the text wraps around the actual object instead of the bounding box.
At least, that's how it works for me. Check the attachment.

Here's the file back with an example
