Microsoft Word 2007 - capitalization issues

I'm running into a bit of a headache with Microsoft Word 2007. Every time I type an ordinal number—like a year—it automatically capitalizes the very next word because there's a period right after the number. So, instead of getting "in the same conditions in 1958," I end up with "in the same conditions in 1958. Year." It’s driving me crazy. I have this faint memory from way back when using older versions of Word that there was a setting within the AutoCorrect options, maybe something like "Do not capitalize first letter of words after numbers," but I just can't seem to dig it up here... 😢

Word Options => Proofing => AutoCorrect Options

Just uncheck: Capitalize first letter of sentences

There’s actually a shorter way to do this, just keep an eye on that blue arrow sitting right under Gyear

I really appreciate the advice, but that’s not quite hitting the mark. Everything you guys have mentioned is already on my radar—it's just not enough to solve this...

What I actually need is for the software to capitalize the first letter of a sentence, but *not* automatically capitalize the word following a list number.... 😢

Try heading into AutoCorrect, then click over to Exceptions—once you're there, just toss all the numbers from 0 through 9 into that "don't capitalize after" field, followed by a period.

Hmm, you know, it might actually work... if I just input the years from 1850 through 2010, it should go through perfectly 😉)

Please tell me I’m not losing my mind here—I know for a fact it was in the old version of Microsoft Word: just don't auto-resize my font after the serial number! 🙂

Mhm, if only I could track down where they tucked it away... I highly doubt they scrapped the option with the new version; usually, they just make it more advanced 🙂

Just try entering 0 through 9 first—don't go typing out the whole thing—it should work fine... also, you really need to uncheck that 'automatically add words to list' box because that "smart" feature is about as intelligent as a brick. 😁

Honestly, it’s way easier to just go to the other tab and add an exception so it stops capitalizing the word "year." Problem solved. You can also toss in "yr" if you prefer using abbreviations.

Microsoft Word 2007 just follows its own logic where anything following a period triggers autocorrect, so it treats "year" like the start of a brand new sentence and capitalizes it. Why they stripped out the option we had back in Microsoft Office 2003... who knows?

@Fosna: It won't let me add these numbers to my Exceptions list... give it a shot if you can, maybe I'm just being a total airhead here... 😢

Look, I hate to break it to you, but you aren't crazy. 😁 Honestly, I have zero clue how you'd even go about automating that.
