Here is a little something... copied over from a forum thread...:

AND HERE COMES THE FIRST AND MOST COMMON MISTAKE!!!!!! What you absolutely MUST NOT do after successfully finishing a download is close the program you used to grab the data. You might be wondering why? Well, if you shut it down, you are essentially cutting off everyone else's ability to access that same file. How does that work? It’s quite simple: the moment you start downloading something, you have entered into an INVISIBLE CONTRACT where you COMMIT to sharing everything you download with the rest of this community. That act of sharing is what we call SEEDING, and in this scenario, you are the SEEDER.
In essence, you are obligated to GIVE BACK what you have TAKEN...

Of course, it isn't for our benefit, but for the sake of others who are just as interested in those movies or songs as you are. Your standing here depends on another concept you will inevitably encounter, which is your RATIO. So, what exactly is that? Your RATIO is simply the relationship between what was TAKEN and what was GIVEN... the DOWNLOAD versus the UPLOAD... the LEECH versus the SEED!!! As long as you maintain a 1:1 ratio, you will NEVER run into any trouble... you won't ever have to worry about a WARNING, let alone a BAN.

Now, since I am somewhat of a newcomer when it comes to using BitTorrent, I was wondering how exactly I should go about sharing the files I download... Does it mean I just leave the program running after the file is finished, or...? I don't quite follow...
Also, how can I ensure my ratio stays as high as possible, and where exactly can I check my current status?

Thanks...

Man, you're stressing over something way too simple—why even bother with all that headache?

If you don't have uTorrent yet, just grab it and get it installed. Look, whenever you're pulling a file from a tracker—doesn't matter if it's a public one or a private one—just leave that file right where you saved it. Don't delete it from uTorrent. That's the whole trick. You're constantly seeding as long as someone else is grabbing it from you (as long as uTorrent is running, obviously). Even if you've only got a few percent of the file, you're still contributing. All you really have to do is not delete or move the file from your computer or out of the client. To keep a decent Ratio, aim for at least 1/1—meaning if you download 1 GB, you give 1 GB back. (Your total upload stats are all sitting there in uTorrent along with everything else)

Of course, not to us personally, but to the other people who are interested in those movies or songs just as much as you are. Your behavior also dictates the next term you'll run into here: RATIO. HAHA. lol, these rules and "contracts" are legendary! First off, tell us, which client are you using?

As for continuing to seed... once you've finished grabbing an album or a song, you'll notice the file moves within the program... just don't stop the upload... or kill the program entirely! Just let it sit in your system tray.

Oh, and by the way... for torrents, I'd suggest checking out http://www.thepiratebay.org and for software, try uTorrent!

As far as the Ratio goes, there's really nothing to worry about as long as you stick to the rules you just laid out for yourself!

Aha... I I must admit, I’m really quite out of my depth here, so thank you so much for the guidance...
So... once I finish downloading a file, say on uTorrent, I just leave it be, right? I shouldn't try moving it from one folder to another or messing with the files once they're on my computer, lest I end up breaking something or making a mess of things...

Anyway... I've gone ahead and installed both uTorrent and BitTorrent...

So, just to make sure I've got this straight... once I finish downloading a file on something like uTorrent, I just leave it be? I shouldn't move it from one folder to another or mess with the files on my computer once they're there, right? I don't want to accidentally break something.

No, you haven't messed anything up at all... you just really don't need both of those programs running!🙄

If only I could be certain of that...🙂
I was honestly starting to get a little worried that I might end up getting banned myself...🙂
Which one would you recommend? I’ve been hearing quite a bit of praise lately for uTorrent...

I mostly stick to uTorrent for private trackers back in the States where maintaining my Ratio is everything. The best thing about uTorrent is how it just automatically starts seeding everything left in my list the second I open it, so I'm always contributing to the upload pool. Once I'm done downloading, I try not to close it right away; I usually leave it running for a bit since that's when the uploading is most active. Sometimes I'll even fire it up when I don't have anything new to grab, just to bump up my Ratio. I move my finished files immediately, then check back after a few days to see how the stats look. If the Ratio is looking weak—meaning nobody's really grabbing it—I'll just wipe it from uTorrent (after making sure I've moved the file, obviously). I try to keep my list under 12-15 items total, including active downloads and seeds, just so my PC doesn't get bogged down.
For those public sites where you don't need an account, I just use BitComet. It's mostly for movies and software. The downside is I have to manually start every single file once it's open. Usually, I'll let things run until the end of the day before cleaning them out.

Sometimes I'll just run both at the same time.

I'd definitely recommend uTorrent.

Thanks, Henry Morales32...
By the way, is it possible to get banned only on the specific trackers where I have an account registered?

Yeah, you don't need to sign up for public trackers—so there's zero risk of getting banned—but honestly, the speeds on those sites suck. If you've got an unlimited data plan, I’d definitely suggest sticking to private trackers instead. If not? Just stick to the public ones. Now, if you do decide to join a private tracker (there's actually a whole thread about them if you want to see which one fits your vibe), you've gotta play by their rules. Usually, they'll demand a 1/1 Ratio and expect you to keep your torrents active for at least 48 hours. Simple as that.

The guy already told you above. Just watch out for what those private trackers demand and stick to their rules. I think some of them won't let you shut things down if you're the only one seeding or whatever.
When I'm grabbing movies—usually through BitComet—I always go for the ones with tons of seeds. Sometimes I'll knock out five movies overnight, maybe even finish them all by 7 or 8 in the morning.
I recently grabbed this patch (it's called the TCIP patch for Windows) that seems to have really helped my speeds on public trackers. Apparently, Windows defaults to only having 10 connections, but this lets you set it to whatever you want. It probably explains why my downloads from public sites are so fast now.

Don't give me that crap, I didn't realize removing a task lowered the seed count. My speeds were trash so I just hit remove every single time.

Interesting... I wonder where you're actually downloading from...😕

So, I’ve been spending some time browsing through the various threads on this forum, and thank God, I’ve finally started to wrap my head around quite a few things...

What I'm curious about now, though, is what exactly the purpose of a firewall is...😕

I've only got one thing to say: this is absolutely brutal.

I’m basically a legendary hacker at this point, so don't even try to explain what a seed or a leecher is to me. You guys clearly have no idea how to spot a scam when it's staring you right in the face.

Look, I might have jumped the gun calling myself some kind of hacker of the century, but let's be real—I definitely know my way around a keyboard.

Is there anyone out there who isn't quite sure what a firewall actually is or what its purpose serves in a network...

So, I was wondering... if I decide to join two or even more private trackers, will I need to keep several different download clients running at once? For instance, if one specific tracker requires me to use uTorrent, does that mean I have to use a separate program for them, or can I just manage everything through a single client while still maintaining my individual Ratio on each site?
thanks...

Man, you've messed up again—you don't need more than uTorrent. It's hands down the best client out there (unless that specific private tracker explicitly bans uTorrent, which almost never happens)

In uTorrent, you can queue up 20 or even 50 movies or apps to download and seed all at once. Your Ratio is just the balance between what you download and what you upload. (For example, if you grab a 700 MB movie and upload back 350 MB over a few days, your ratio for that file is 0.5—once you hit 700 MB uploaded, you're at a 1.0 ratio.)

uTorrent shows you the individual ratio for every single file, while the private tracker's website will show your total site-wide Ratio (usually right next to your username)
