Matthew Anderson4, the way laws and procedures are handled in this country is a joke. Seen it a million times. Based on this specific case, I don't see how anyone could think otherwise. Some things are just common sense. She didn't handle herself perfectly—sure—but the reaction she got was totally overkill. Given the players involved and the circumstances, the whole thing is just pathetic and unnecessary. The cop probably has his buddies backing him up, but I bet even he knows he shouldn't have let it go down like this.

Matthew Anderson4 said:Honestly, this whole debate is pointless.

What would you even do if you were a cop? Just turn a blind eye?

Not this. People jaywalk all the time without even looking, so often it's not even worth counting on a daily basis. I crossed the street five times today alone. Supposedly that's less dangerous than those idiots speeding through town constantly. And you know what? They still get away with it (mostly) without a hitch.

It’s honestly terrifying to think how much more acceptable it would be if a woman screwed up like this in a society that actually functions

If things were actually organized around here, it wouldn't even be a violation. Just crossing a local street.

Everyone's seen it a million times, starting with the fact that we've all jumped a red light a million times ourselves and never got a ticket or a warning. Pretty sure this cop has seen plenty of others blow through a red light and just winked at them a million times, too. Or seen someone peeing behind a dumpster, forgetting their ID, or speeding, or breaking any other one of those countless "trivial" laws broken every single day. All without a second thought. But what's the point of those laws anyway? What's the point of his miserable shifts if he's only ever going to go after major criminals and dangerous people?

I wasn't asking "what wouldn't happen." Obviously this shouldn't have happened, he wouldn't want to rewind time, and neither would anyone else.
So, what are you suggesting? That we scrap the laws about crossing the street entirely, or that they should just never be enforced in practice? Or maybe you think they should be strictly enforced every single time, which honestly sounds like the most extreme idea of the three.

Once again, people are mixing up their facts. She didn't end up on the pavement because she crossed the street illegally; she ended up there because she ignored the officer, started waving her arms at him, and basically told him off. I guess she thought she could just act like he was an idiot.

Even here, there's no excuse for how they handled that old lady—it’s honestly pretty pathetic that they couldn't just deal with her like a normal human being instead of tossing her onto the ground like trash.
The real issue is that the rules don't seem to apply to everyone equally. I know it because I've seen it happen more times than I can count—the police just look the other way whenever some local celebrity or big-shot "somebody" breaks the law, and I'm willing to bet it's the exact same story in cities all across America.

Anyway, check out these two interesting photos. Granted, the first one isn't directly related to this specific incident, but both of them make the point perfectly:

Man, why does everything have to be an either-or thing? Obviously, he doesn't *only* have to hunt down major felons. That's impossible. It’s simple: some infractions are trivial and, for the most part, aren't even really offenses—it's all about context. If the road is clear, people are gonna cross. Nobody stands there like a deer in headlights on an empty street waiting for the pedestrian signal to turn green. Some laws are just stupid and need to be more about situational compromise. Like, if some idiot sprints in front of a moving subway train, yeah, they should get a ticket. Laws need context, not just some rigid formula.

She missed the mark on her approach, no question. When you corner me with that "what would you do" question, look, she’d probably just let her go or give her a slap on the wrist for something minor. She isn't gonna tackle her like some drunk, aggressive psycho. It just doesn't fit.

Are we even talking about context here?

Look, if they actually managed to catch the real criminals for once, maybe women wouldn't feel the need to sprint across a busy street just to beat someone else to the trash can.😉

Walter Grant5 said:Give me a break. Just imagine if someone treated your mother like that.

The whole procedure is garbage. You don't just grab a woman in her 60s just because she crossed on a red light while walking—let alone doing it by pinning her against a car while cuffing her behind her back.

Saying they should be focusing on more serious crimes isn't an attack on one specific officer; it’s about how the entire police department operates. When is this kind of heavy-handed approach even justified?

The "logic" is just treating the wealthy like they're living in absolute poverty
while acting like anyone who actually struggles is just some fake-rich elitist piece of trash.😉

I honestly wonder what he’d say if his grandma was a Real Estate Agent and the cop was Barcaboy
