When Plenković received his red card, he claimed it was due to the sluggish response to Covid, though at the time, most people felt that was just a shaky excuse to avoid talking about those asset disclosures directly. And now...

Anthony Jackson2 said:The mortality rate isn't anywhere near 3%—not when everyone who dies gets lumped into the stats, and as someone already pointed out, a huge chunk of those infected aren't even being counted. I mean, believing there were only 80 cases here after doctors were interacting with dozens of people daily—every single one of those infected was out there somewhere, touching things, sneezing...

Cut me some slack if I say there aren't at least 1,000 people in the US today dealing with mild or zero symptoms. My old man had all the classic signs at the end of January—about three weeks of unexplained fever, a cough, just feeling wiped out. They tested him for various infections and did lung scans—nothing showed up. Who's to say this virus didn't hit the States long before we actually started testing and tracking the situation? Half these cases probably just got misdiagnosed as the flu.

Nobody can really guarantee anything, and honestly, this whole process of counting new daily cases feels a bit like counting cars at a border crossing. It seems a little pointless and maybe just serves to stir up panic. Instead of this, they should have focused on social distancing guidelines, handed out millions of masks, kept things open, and most importantly, strictly barred anyone with even mild symptoms—including those with Covid—from entering any medical facilities. What good does it do to go there and just spread the infection to other sick patients? Maybe it's better if they stay home, treat themselves with standard methods, and isolate in their own rooms. Hospitals should really be reserved for the severe cases. Those two twins were kept in the hospital for weeks without much reason. There are probably hundreds, maybe thousands, of cases already. I think the priority should be treating people rather than counting them like cattle.

What kind of absolute demagoguery is this? Even Milka Planinc would be embarrassed by that "counting them like livestock" line.
And how exactly would you propose counting them, if I may ask?

Counting patients is a fundamental necessity. It’s how you determine how many medications you need, how many doctors, how many nurses, how many ventilators, how many beds, and how many rooms...
So, how else would you count them besides... one, two, three, four, five, six, and so on? Is that what you mean? Counting them like livestock?

Support for the Director of the University Hospital in Mostar
I can only imagine how he must be feeling
—he probably thought he could just cruise through his term as director until a better opportunity popped up, but then that damn virus hits—and right there in his own hospital at that,
. Now, what is he even supposed to say to the reporters?
Misfortune won't just go away on its own
. The
Devil will get her.

I guess it's worth noting that up until now, most cases here have been mild, with only one moderate case. Plus, more and more doctors are getting infected, and I suppose they weren't all away skiing in Austria. If not the sick patients, then who is spreading it? Yesterday, the ER had over 300 calls from people panicking and asking to be tested. Why even treat them if it isn't a severe case, especially when the focus is on containing the spread? Nowadays, it seems like anyone in America who coughs thinks they're dying. You can see what happens in Italy when sick people come into contact with the virus. Even recently, family doctors have been advising people with the flu or similar symptoms not to come in unless absolutely necessary, since clinic waiting rooms are basically the number one spot to pick up something new. I feel like I'm stating the obvious here. Once there are thousands of infections—and there will be—that's when this advice will become standard. When the Secretary starts talking about it on TV, remember what I said. There's no point in counting or testing everyone if they don't have a severe case. It doesn't make sense; the raw numbers are almost irrelevant because they just keep climbing anyway. What matters is that people with different levels of illness get the right treatment. Mild cases can probably stay home with some pills and tea while isolating, keeping distance from others. Severe cases go to the hospital, but without the panic.

Critical cases at the hospital, but without all the fanfare?

And just how many ventilators are you planning to reserve for critical cases if you aren't counting them like cattle?
Do you actually have any more sophisticated methods of counting?

I mean, why even bother reserving them? I don't get it. It’s not like you’ve got a whole stash of unused ones just sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

Reserve, procure, deploy, pull from storage... pick your favorite phrasing.
Beyond that, ventilators are more than just small pieces of equipment.
It is absolutely vital to know how many patients you'll be facing.

Yeah, we have them available for export 🙄

Without the hype, there's no reason for news stations to hover outside hospitals counting up the severe cases. It doesn't really help anyone; I guess it just creates panic and unrealistic expectations. I don't think the US will be able to stop this epidemic using the same methods they used in China, mostly because there isn't much of a plan or the will to go that far. People might just have to get used to this new illness until the fear starts to fade. The Chinese could lock down an entire megalopolis because they have plenty more just like it, but in the US, shutting down entire states would be totally unsustainable. It would be like trying to shut down just New York City or just Italy to solve everything—it's just not the same thing. So, maybe this illness will stick around for a while, and we'll all just need to build up immunity. I doubt any government official will ever go on TV and say the virus is gone forever and won't come back. That’s why I feel like counting cases is a bit pointless; those numbers don't just reset to zero. They never do for any disease, not even for something like the plague which can resurface.

Getting more right now? Yeah, probably not happening. 😁

Whatever you've got, you've got. The whole world is basically walking around with 80% of people infected who don't even realize they've got Covid—they just think it's a freaking cold.

And what's the actual point of doctors or hospitals knowing patient counts when we're in a pandemic? The number of infected—or even potential cases—is so massive you can't reliably pin down a final number, and there's zero chance we have the cash or gear to treat everyone equally anyway. But hey, sure, let's just "count them like cattle" to stir up euphoria or trigger a panic.

Honestly, the ones who got hit first will probably come out on top—they'll get the right care and be at the lowest risk. Once things really blow up later, the question becomes who actually gets help...
