Alright, I ran Super Pi a few times, then switched over to the Nvidia benchmark—now my motherboard temp is sitting steady at 58°. It isn't budging, either higher or lower. The CPU is hovering between 55 and 60, while the GPU is holding at 48.

Either the sensor is faulty 🤷
or perhaps the chipset drivers are causing the issue 🤔

Alright. I just repositioned one of the vents toward the chipset, and the temperature started dropping—so it looks like Everest isn't the issue here. I'll check the Gigabyte official site to see if there's a new driver available.

EDIT: Or maybe Vista is just messing everything up..

EDIT2: Actually, let me update you—I'm posting this from XP now. Turns out Vista really is the culprit for everything. Over here, Everest is showing somewhere between 25 and 30 degrees. So, I don't know... there's an older version of Everest too, so now I'm not sure if it's Vista or the newer Everest causing the trouble.

swiftcobra65 said:not really... I don't know, looking at this now, it feels off. Just popped the case open and the temp jumped to 59°. Plus, here's the weird part: Everest is reporting the CPU at 27°, while both cores are sitting at 44°. GPU is at 46, drive is at 29. These numbers feel totally bogus. Especially that Proxmox thing...

edit: running Everest version 4.50.1330, ultimate

Having your CPU temp be half of what the chipset reports doesn't mean you're crazy; under normal conditions, those numbers shouldn't be that far apart.

The best way to check is just using your finger. If you touch it, the chipset heatsink should feel slightly warm, maybe around 35-40°.

Edit: It's also possible your heatsink isn't making good contact with the chipset. Check that out.

Question
I was browsing through some threads about overclocking lately, which got me thinking—I have a few questions.
Here is my current setup:
450W power supply
Radeon x1950gt
2GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
Athlon 64 X2 4400 Dual Core
(If there is anything else I should mention or add to this list, please let me know)

Is it actually possible to overclock this specific configuration, and if so, what kind of limits am I looking at?

It's possible... at least until it inevitably dies... though when that happens is anyone's guess... just read the overclocking guide.

If you aren't able to successfully boot into Windows, then you've likely pushed your overclocking just a bit too far.😁
At that point, you’ll need to start adjusting your Vcore, Vdimm, and various other voltage settings to find that sweet spot.😁

Provided that your temperatures are looking good, you should feel free to push further.
However, if they're already creeping up a little high, it might be worth investing in some extra cooling solutions.

For your graphics card, you can handle the overclocking using tools like RivaTuner, ATI Tool, or similar software.
If you're still running the stock cooler on an X1950GT, would it be a good idea to swap it out for an S1? I certainly think so; it should keep those temperatures remarkably low.

Well, if you don't quite know your way around the BIOS yet, there isn't much else to be done!😂

I assume we're talking about a laptop here, if I had to guess

not in the slightest

Yeah, we're talking about the laptop. Could I overclock the RAM and the processor? And honestly, is it even worth the hassle?

Sure. There's a local shop nearby that specializes in custom branding and overclocking laptops. I'm wondering how much of a benefit that actually provides... honestly, just put the processor under some heavy stress and let me know what the temperatures look like during full load.

Sure, they say it works out here in the States, but honestly, based on what I've seen around here... please.
And even if you actually manage to pull it off, the returns are mysteriously pathetic at best.

All you're really doing is risking a loss or burning through your cash, without ever seeing a dime in return.

core 2 quad q6600 2.4 @ 3.0 GHz
voltage 1.45 V
550 W PSU
I'm running an ASUS Arctic Square cooler
After playing Call of Duty 4 for about two hours, my PC just shuts itself off... how the hell do I stabilize this processor so it actually works right? Temperatures look fine while I'm just sitting on the desktop, but as soon as I start gaming—especially after several hours of play—it dies. Any advice?🙏

And what kind of temps are you seeing while gaming?

That's a massive amount of power draw, too...

Is 2.4GHz really not enough for Call of Duty 4? Why on earth would you give him that little...
I’d suggest setting it back to stock and just dropping the voltage by 0.1v.

That’s enough of that. I’m running way too many things at once, and if I'm not hitting 3.0, the whole system starts stuttering on me. At 3.0, everything runs smooth... just the way it should be. As for temperatures, I can't say for sure because my rig always shuts down while I'm mid-game. I did try to alt-tab a couple of times to check the temps, and I think one core was sitting around 60 degrees, while the other two were about 7 degrees cooler. Is there any actual fix to keep this thing stable? Could it be an issue with the heatsink, or maybe I just mounted the damn thing wrong?

Maybe... check the thermal paste too...

But drop that voltage first...
Since when was a quad-core meant for gaming?

That’s just what the guy at Best Buy convinced you was the gold standard...

Hey guys—so I’ve got this Intel dual core running at 2.66GHz and I’m kind of itching to overclock it. Anyone here actually know how that works? Could someone walk me through the process? I've been messing around with some graphics stuff lately and I'm starting to feel like I might need a bit more juice under the hood... 😉Man, using RivaTuner to tweak the GPU is honestly the easy part—super straightforward. But trying to push the processor? That’s a whole different beast entirely. I've been messing around with overclocking for years, and honestly, it really depends on how much headroom you've actually got under the hood. You can try to crank it up, but there's always that limit where things just start getting sketchy... anyway, does anyone know what the actual ceiling is for this specific chip or how high you can safely bump it before things get dicey? Thanks a ton!
